EOU Softball Sweeps Northwest in Series Finale

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The EOU softball team wrapped up its four-game home stand against Northwest taking the opening game 1-0, clinching the series, and followed it up in game two with a 6-0 triumph Saturday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field.

In the fifth frame of game number one, the Mountaineers took the lead for good and scored the only run of the contest as senior designated player Lauren Burchak singled up the middle for her 40th RBI of the year. It proved to be enough for junior pitcher Hailey Kline who earned her 13th win of the year.

Senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem got the much needed run support early with two runs in the bottom half of the first, followed by two more in the fourth, to complete the sweep on the day.

GAME ONE – EOU 1, NU 0
Just like Friday, runs were once again at a premium Saturday morning in the first affair but the offense pulled through with two outs, scoring the decisive run.

The Mountaineers put Kline in position to pick up her 11th complete game of the year in the fifth inning. With senior center fielder Taylor Gerlach on second and senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker at first with a fielder's choice, Burchak stepped in and lined one up the middle scoring Gerlach.

Heading into the final frame, the Eagles drew a leadoff-walk to put the tying run on first. The following at-bat, senior catcher Alex Shuster made a stellar throw from behind the plate to pick off the runner at first, eliminating any chance of a Northwest rally.

Kline scattered five hits in her complete game, and struck out seven with no walks.

GAME TWO – EOU 6, NU 0
The Blue and Gold wasted no time jumping on the board first. After singles from Barker and junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier, both runners advanced to second and third on a fielding error. A base hit from junior second baseman Maryssa Santi and an illegal pitch gave EOU a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Barker led off the frame with an opposite field homerun over the left field wall, her 10th blast of the year. The very next inning, the Mounties turned two Northwest errors into two runs, for the 5-0 advantage. For added measure, Santi's RBI double in the sixth made the match 6-0, as a 6-4-3 double play in the final frame sealed the victory.

Van Laethem (6-6) struck out four and surrendered five hits in her complete game victory.
