EOU Softball Wins in Extras, Sweeps UBC on Day One

SURREY, BC. – The EOU softball team ran its winning streak to five games, needing extra innings in game two to come away with the doubleheader sweep on day one at Softball City, Friday afternoon.

Chelsea Spanier was the highlight of game one going 2-for-3 at the dish, blasting a three-run homer giving the junior four homers on the year.

In game two, the Blue and Gold saw its 4-1 lead at one point, disappear, only to rally back with clutch hitting in the top of the eighth with two outs.

GAME ONE – EOU 6, UBC 4
The Mountaineers quickly jumped on the board first, capitalizing on two fielding errors by the Thunderbirds. With senior center fielder Taylor Gerlach standing on second, then advancing to third on a grounder to the right side, senior designated player Lauren Burchak flew out to left field for the sacrifice fly.

In the third, the EOU bats came alive with three runs on four hits, to take a 5-0 lead. Senior catcher Alex Shuster led off the frame with a double to center and was brought in two batters later with an RBI single courtesy of senior shortstop Lena Richards. After Burchak reached on with a fielder's choice, this put junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier in position to blast her fourth homerun of the year over the center field wall. The margin ballooned to 5-0.

After tacking on one more run in the top of the fourth, EOU held the Thunderbirds scoreless through six innings on four hits, but UBC would not go away without a fight. Senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem retired the first two batters in the seventh, but the drama only began. Back-to-back singles and a couple of errors from the Mountaineers made it a 6-2 contest.

Still looking for the final out, junior pitcher Hailey Kline was called in from the bullpen. The rally continued for UBC with a two-run RBI double from Emily Chorpita, but the long-awaited out came next as Kline got the very next batter to strikeout swinging.

Van Laethem (7-6) picked up the 'W' going six and two-thirds, allowing four runs (none earned) on six hits.

GAME TWO – EOU 7, UBC 5
Burchak's lead-off homerun in the second gave the Blue and Gold an early 1-0 lead. It was the senior's 10th blast of the season and puts her tied for first on the team with senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker. The Mountaineers added two more in the third as Burchak drew a bases-loaded walk, and Spanier tallied an RBI sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.

The Thunderbirds responded in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homerun to left, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1. Batting second in the fifth with one out, Richards singled, and with Barker reaching on a throwing miscue, EOU now had runners on third and second. Spanier made the affair 4-1 with an RBI single, while senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach's groundout added another run.

UBC, just like in game one, did not go away. The Thunderbirds tallied four runs in the next two frames to tie the affair at 5-5, heading into the seventh. The top of the seventh proved to be scoreless, until the eighth where the Mountaineers came in the clutch with two outs.

Stepping into the box with one on, Richards ripped an RBI double, bringing in T. Gerlach across the plate. Barker followed up the act with a single to the left, to regain the lead, 7-5. Now three outs away from a win, closing out the home team was no easy task.

With a runner on and two outs, Kline yielded a single and a walk to load up the bases for UBC. Unfazed, Kline rose to the challenge and escaped the jam with a strikeout to complete the sweep.

Kline (14-5) notched her 12th complete game of the season. It's the second game this year in which Kline has racked up 12 K's in a single game. The junior scattered 10 hits on five runs (three earned) over eight innings.
