EOU Softball Splits with UBC to Complete Weekend Series

SURREY, BC. – Despite dropping game one in five innings, the EOU softball team mustered a way to bounce back in game two and closed out the series taking three of four from the Thunderbirds of UBC Saturday afternoon, at Softball City Complex.

The Mountaineers could not get the offensive train rolling in game one, registering only four hits through five innings, stranding five on the bags. Meanwhile, UBC's big innings in the second and fifth, helped the home side close out the affair in five frames.

Trailing 1-0 after the first in game two, the Mountaineers were held scoreless until tying the contest in the fifth, followed by two-run sixth on four hits to take control the rest of the way.

GAME ONE – EOU 0, UBC 8
Scoreless after two, UBC collected three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the third, to jump out in front, 3-0. Over the next three frames, EOU was limited to only two hits, while the Thunderbirds broke free in the fifth, turning four hits into five runs en route to earning the victory by mercy rule.

Senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem (7-7) got the starting nod in the circle, tossing four innings of work, scattered four hits but surrendered six runs (two earned) in the losing effort.

Junior pitcher Hailey Kline was brought on for one inning of relief before giving up one earned run on three hits.

GAME TWO – EOU 4, UBC 1
Quickly trailing 1-0 after the first, EOU's bats slowly but surely started to come alive. The Mounties third hit of the day came in the fifth off the bat of junior second baseman Maryssa Santi. On board with a single to left, Santi was moved over to second on a sac bunt, then later scored on a passed ball.

Leading off the sixth inning with back-to-back singles were seniors Cheyenne Barker and Lauren Burchak. After a grounder moved Barker over to third, she later scored on an RBI single from Santi and freshman Heather Hawkes – who pinch ran for Burchak – came around to tack on another run on a Thunderbird fielding error. The Blue and Gold ended the inning with four hits.

Scoring once more in the top of the seventh for added measure, EOU stepped onto the diamond once more and closed out UBC for good. Yielding just a single, Kline forced a grounder for the routine 6-3 putout to end the game.

Kline (15-5) went the distance for the 13th time this season. The junior surrendered just five hits and allowed one run.
