EOU Softball Splits Twinbill with Northwest

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Despite dropping game one to Northwest, the EOU softball team bounced back in game two behind junior pitcher Hailey Kline's 12 strikeouts, which tied a career-best, to earn the doubleheader split Friday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field.

It was a scoreless affair up until the sixth inning of game one, where a throwing miscue by EOU allowed a runner in scoring position to come in and tack the only run of the game in a final score of 1-0, in favor of the visiting Eagles.

In game two, this time, it was the Blue and Gold who capitalized on a throwing error to score the first run of the game in the bottom half of the third. Later on in the fifth inning, senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker came through with an RBI double, which proved to be the insurance run the Mountaineers needed in their 2-1 triumph.

GAME ONE – EOU 0, NU 1
It was an offensive struggle at the dish for the Mountaineers, as the squad only produced four hits total in game one. In the fourth with two batters away, junior second baseman Maryssa Santi collected her second hit of the contest to reach on board. Senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach then drew a walk, but NU's pitcher Rachel Hawley escaped the two out jam, striking out senior catcher Alex Shuster on a 2-2 pitch.

Over the next three frames, both teams combined for a total of three hits, while stranding three on the bags. With a runner on in the seventh, junior shortstop Lena Richards fielded a chopper hit to her, but the throw to first got away from the junior. Barker corralled the ball near the fence, launched it over to the plate, but the sliding head-first dive was ruled safe, ultimately being the game-winning run for the Eagles.

In the circle for the Blue and Gold, senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem (5-6) went the distance for her seventh complete game of the 2017 campaign, striking out three, while scattering seven hits.

Hawley (7-10) tossed a complete game for Northwest to earn the win.

GAME TWO – EOU 2, NU 1
In the top of the third with Richards on second base, a Barker single through the left side, allowed Richards to come home and score due to a throwing miscue by the NU left fielder, giving EOU the 1-0 advantage.

Looking to tack on insurance for Kline, the Mountaineers did just that in the fifth with one run on three hits. With senior left fielder Taylor Gerlach standing on second and Richards on first, Barker sat on a 2-1 count and drilled an RBI double to left-center to push the margin to 2-0.

Heading into the seventh with a 2-0 lead, the affair nearly got away from the Mountaineers. With two outs already booked and a runner on second, the Eagles took advantage of an EOU throwing error and made it a one-point contest, 2-1. Now with runners on first and second, Kline forced a groundout out over to junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier, who tapped the bag for the unassisted play.

With the 'W', Kline moves to 12-5 on the year and has now tossed 10 complete games this season. Along with 12 strikeouts, the senior only allowed one run (unearned), two walks and five hits.

Stephanie Granger (2-6) picked up the loss for the Eagles, going six innings, scattered eight hits on two earned runs.
