EOU Softball Splits with No. 18 SOU, Clinches No. 4 Seed in CCC Tournament

ASHLAND, Ore. – The EOU softball team came out on top in a convincing fashion in game one, toppling the No. 18 SOU Raiders 14-1 as seven different Mountaineers knocked in runs. The home side recovered in game two, holding the Blue and Gold to just three hits to earn the split Saturday afternoon at University Field.

Scoreless after two innings, the EOU bats came alive in the third producing 11 runs on five hits. The inning was highlighted by senior first baseman – who got the starting nod at shortstop - Cheyenne Barker's three-run jack to right-field, her 13th of the season.

Game two was not kind to the Mounties, as the team was limited on offense, going 3-for-25 at the plate. Junior pitcher Hailey Kline tossed three and a third while senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem came in for two and two-thirds of relief.

GAME ONE – EOU 14, SOU 1 (FIVE INN.)
The Blue and Gold went 12-for-31 at the plate, getting hits from eight different Mountaineers. The heart of the order combined to hit 5-for-10 and knocked in six runs across the plate. Barker, juniors Chelsea Spanier and Ashlee Muller tallied two runs apiece.

In the circle for EOU, senior pitcher Alexis Spence (4-0) tossed the complete game allowing just one run, one walk on four hits.

With one away and the bases juiced, senior designated player Lauren Burchak laced a two-run RBI base hit down the left-field line. Spanier followed it up with an RBI single of her own and later scored on a wild pitch to make the margin 4-0.

Muller and senior left fielder Taylor Smith swelled the gap to six with a single and a double, respectively, before junior catcher Lena Richards' RBI base hit made it 8-0. The 11-run third inning damage was finally capped off by Barker. Sitting on a 1-1 pitch, the senior sent one out of the yard for three runs.

EOU tacked on three more runs in the fourth, capitalizing on three errors from SOU's side.

In the process, EOU handed the Raiders their first run-rule loss since 2015 while breaking Karlee Coughlin's (13-1) perfect record in the circle.

The Blue and Gold with the victory, secured the No. 4 seed heading into the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament next weekend.

GAME TWO – EOU 1, SOU 8
After two runs and two hits in the second inning for the Raiders, EOU cut the deficit to one in the top of the third, 2-1, with junior right fielder Maryssa Santi scoring on a fielding error.

The following bottom frame, SOU turned three hits into two runs and tallied three more scores in the fourth for the 7-0 advantage.

Producing the just two hits over the next two stanzas, the Raiders added one more run sixth as the home side earned the split.
