EOU Softball Rallies to Win Game One, Splits with No. 18 SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. –  The EOU softball team faced its second-straight top 20 opponent in a week, coming out on top in game one, 8-4 but fell in the second game 6-4, to earn a split with No. 18 Southern Oregon Friday afternoon, at University Field.

Tied 4-4 going into the top of the seventh frame, the Mountaineers loaded up the bases for senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker. Ahead in the count 2-1, Barker laced a bases-clearing double to right center to give EOU a 7-4 lead, eventually 8-4 before sealing the game one victory.

EOU headed into the final frame down 6-1 and nearly came back scoring three runs on three hits. But the hole proved to be too much to climb out of as SOU held on to win, 6-4.

GAME ONE – EOU 8, SOU 4
EOU led off the contest with back-to-back singles from senior center fielder Taylor Gerlach and junior shortstop Lena Richards. Barker would ground into a double play but senior designated player Lauren Burchak laced one to left field for the early 1-0 lead. It was a short lead as the home side struck in the bottom half collecting two runs on three hits including one EOU error, for the 2-1 advantage.

In the top half of the third, Barker started off the frame with a double, two batters later, junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier's single would plate her home. The following frame, T. Gerlach scored on Richard's double to right center, Burchak then added an RBI single to left for the 4-2 lead.

In the sixth with one away, the Raiders capitalized on a EOU error to put runners on second and third with one out. Abigail Lund knotted the affair hitting a base hit through the left side to score both runners.

Looking to rally in the seventh, the Mountaineers came in the clutch with two away. After junior Kasidee Lemberger was thrown out at the plate, EOU loaded up the bases for Barker as she lined a three-run double to right center for the 7-4 lead. Burchak's single made it an 8-4 ballgame. Despite conceding a run in the bottom half of the seventh, EOU closed out the game on a double play to compete the upset.

Senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem (8-9) pitched a complete game, surrendering five runs (four earned) while scattering eight hits.

Six Mountaineers had two or more hits including Burchak who went 4-for-4 with three RBI.

GAME TWO – EOU 4, SOU 6
Trailing 2-0 to the Raiders, the Blue and Gold cut the deficit to one run in fourth inning. After consecutive hits from Burchak and Spanier, Lemberger's single to center drove home senior Lacey Usabel – pinch ran for Burchak.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Raiders struck tallying two runs on four hits and produced two more runners across the plate in the fifth for the 6-1 advantage.

Trying to mount a comeback, EOU nearly accomplished the feat in the final frame. Richards' double down the right field line scored in one to put runners on second and third. Barker dug into the box and hit a two-run single, bringing Burchak to the dish – the potential tying run- but the senior would end the ballgame on a fly out to left.

Junior pitcher Hailey Kline (15-7) picked up the loss tossing six innings while allowing six runs on seven hits.

Karlee Coughlin (13-0) kept her record perfect going the distance surrendering eight hits on four runs.
