EOU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against No. 15 Corban on Senior Day

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Despite dropping game one to No. 15 Corban in five innings, 10-0, the EOU softball team bounced back in a close affair to send its seniors out with a 7-5 victory at Peggy Anderson Field, Saturday afternoon.

Seniors Cheyenne Barker, Lauren Burchak, Jorden Gerlach, Taylor Gerlach, Lauren Schwalbach, Alex Shuster, Taylor Smith, Alexis Spence, Lacey Usabel, and Haylie Van Laethem were honored after both contests.

Game one, Corban took a 5-0 lead after four frames before tacking on five more the following inning to win via run-rule.

In game two, junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier opened the scoring with a two-run shot to center. EOU tallied two more in the fourth but Corban tied the contest with four runs in the bottom half. In the end, Barker's go-ahead homerun in the sixth pulled the Mountaineers through in a 7-5 triumph.

GAME ONE – EOU 0, CU 10
Through four innings Taylor Eilders RBI double gave Corban a 5-0 advantage. The Mountaineers finished the game with two hits, having only mustered one in the bottom half of the fourth. The affair got out of hand for EOU in the top half of the fifth. Corban took advantage of three Mountie errors and finished the frame with five runs on three hits as the Warriors closed out the ballgame.

Van Laethem (7-9) exited the circle in the fourth, scattering seven hits while allowing three earned runs.

GAME TWO – EOU 7, CU 5
Having just two hits in game one, T. Gerlach's leadoff single kick started the EOU offense. Up next, Spanier dug into the box and smashed her fifth roundtripper of the season over the center field wall to give the Blue and Gold a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the third, Barker's RBI double brought Spanier across the plate. Burchak followed it up hitting an RBI single up the middle, putting the home team up 4-0.
Corban however, stormed back in the top half of the fourth with four runs on five hits, including two homeruns.

EOU momentarily regained the lead in the bottom half, but Corban responded with a solo shot to once again tie the contest, 5-5.

Looking to break the tie once and for all, Barker blasted the go-ahead run in the fifth over the right field wall which nearly grazed the scoreboard. It was the senior's 12th homerun of the year.

After adding a run for good measure in the sixth, EOU closed out the ballgame in the seventh to earn the doubleheader split and in the process, snapped Corban's 17-game winning streak.

Spence (3-0) went the distance conceding 14 hits while allowing five runs.

UP NEXT
EOU (26-15, 15-9 CCC) travels to Ashland, Ore., Friday to square off against No. 18 Southern Oregon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
