Mountaineers Can’t Cool Owls Hot Bats, Fall in Sweep to No. 19 Oregon Tech

HERMISTON, Ore. – Playing its second set of games against No. 19 Oregon Tech, the EOU softball team couldn't stop the hot-hitting Owls, falling in a 2-0 sweep Sunday afternoon.

Oregon Tech dominated the day, scoring a total of 23 runs in both games. In game one, the Owls blew past the Mountaineers 11-0 in a five inning game. The Mountaineers (4-7, 1-2 CCC), were able to tally six runs in game two, but the Owls once again put up double figures, scoring 12.

GAME ONE – OIT 11, EOU 0 (FIVE INN.)
Oregon Tech (10-3, 2-1 CCC), scored six runs in the second as the Owls combined for seven hits, two of which were doubles in the inning alone.

Posting a hit a piece for EOU was junior Lena Richards and senior Lauren Burchak, while the pitching duo of junior Hailey Kline and senior Haylie Van Laethem combined for two strikeouts and 12 groundouts. The Mountie defense struggled in the game as the team tallied five errors.

GAME TWO – OIT 12, EOU 6
The Blue and Gold were able to get on the board, including three runs in the third but the Owl offense continued its reign from game one.

Junior Chelsea Spanier and senior Cheyenne Barker each finished the second game 2-for-3 while Barker carded four RBI and a homer.

On the mound for the Mountaineers were Van Laethem, freshman Kiersten Murphy and senior Alexis Spence. The trio combined for six groundouts while Spence chalked up the only strikeout on three and one third innings pitched.

EOU got on the board first, when in the first Barker took the Owls to deep left-center for a homer, bringing home Spanier who had put up a single just before Barker.

Into the top-half of the third, Oregon Tech found themselves down 2-1 on the scoreboard and found some motivation, as the Owls put up six runs on three homers and three singles. Both Sadie Birch and Jacey Conklin put up multiple RBI home runs.

The Mountaineers responded in the bottom half of the inning, drawing within three runs, 7-5 when Kaitlyn Reynolds crossed the plate on a throwing error before Barker went yard again to left-center for two more RBI.

The fourth was another huge inning for the Owls as they added five more runs to their lead on a single, a double and two home runs.

Junior Maryssa Santi kicked off the bottom-half of the seventh with a triple, while her teammate freshman Payton Pocklington brought her home on a sacrifice groundout the following at bat. However, it would be the only run the Mountaineers could put up, ultimately falling 12-6.
