EOU Softball Scores 16 Runs, Sweeps Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – The EOU softball team hit the road for a pair of conference games this weekend and came away with a sweep on day one, earning a 7-4 victory in game one and a 9-4 triumph in game two.

The Mountaineers (6-7, 3-2 CCC) combined for a total of 16 runs on 25 hits at the plate Sunday afternoon. The heart of the order for EOU did most of the damage as senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker and senior designated player Lauren Burchak each hit a homerun and tallied for a combined seven RBIs.

GAME ONE – EOU 7, NCU 4
After a scoreless two innings from both squads, the EOU offense exploded with six runs in the top of the third. After reaching on a single and stealing second, junior center fielder Kaitlyn Reynolds came in and scored courtesy of an RBI single from junior shortstop Lena Richards.

After junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier drew a walk, Barker stepped up to the plate a hit a three-run blast to right field to give the Mountaineers 4-0 advantage. It was Barker's fourth homerun of the year as the Mountaineers tacked on two more runs to cap the frame leading 6-0.

NCU (2-10, 2-3 CCC) answered in the bottom half of the fourth with a one out double from Higbee, who would come in to score off a single into center field. In the fifth frame, the Beacons capitalized on a throwing error from Spanier and brought in three runs on two hits to cut the Blue and Gold deficit down to two runs, 6-4.

In the sixth inning, senior catcher Alex Shuster reached base with an infield single and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Reynolds. Senior left fielder Taylor Gerlach then dug in and hit a double down the right field line to bring in Shuster for the score.

After throwing a solid five innings of work and only giving up two earned runs, senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem left the circle and was replaced by junior pitcher Hailey Kline. Kline shut the door on the Beacons tossing two innings of work, and striking out two batters en route to earning her first save of the season.

GAME TWO – EOU 9, NCU 5
It was a similar start to game one for both teams as the scoreless affair was broken up by EOU in the top of the third with two runs. After Barker singled to right with one out, Burchak stepped into the batter's box and hit a two-run homerun (6th HR of the season) over the left field wall for the 2-0 lead.

The Beacons responded with a run in the bottom half of the third, but the Mountaineers tacked on some insurance in the fourth with three runs on three hits. With Reynolds standing at third due to a throwing error, Richards singled to center to bring the junior in to score. Two batters later with two runners on, Burchak came through with an RBI single, giving EOU a 5-1 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Blue and Gold saw two more players come across the dish to score but the Beacons responded with a furious bottom half with three runs on three hits, bringing EOU's lead down to three, 7-4.

EOU tacked on two more runs in the sixth, which was highlighted by senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach connecting on an RBI triple. NCU tried to mount a comeback but only saw one run score over the next two innings as EOU sealed the victory.

Kline (4-4) threw a complete game (4th of the season) allowing four earned runs on seven hits while fanning six batters.

Janieve Boyles picked up the loss for the Beacons hurling six innings with five earned runs on 11 hits.
