Spence Musters Shutout, EOU Softball Takes Two More from Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – Senior sluggers Cheyenne Barker and Lauren Burchak stayed red-hot at the dish in game one, and senior righty Alexis Spence tossed her first-career shutout in game two as the EOU softball team took more wins from Northwest Christian on Monday afternoon.

With the triumph in game one, EOU (8-7, 4-2 CCC) moved into third place of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC), while Northwest Christian fell to 2-12 and 2-4 in CCC play.

GAME ONE – EOU 10, NCU 2 (FIVE INN.)
EOU collected the series sweep over Northwest Christian after blasting the Beacons in game one, 10-2.

Both Barker and Burchak registered two-run homers, and senior hurler Haylie Van Laethem earned the 'W' thanks to a four-hitter performance in the circle.

In the first, EOU plated three runs on two hits to go up early. With senior left fielder Taylor Gerlach on third, Barker belted an RBI double, and then Burchak smashed one over the center-field fence to cap the three-run flurry.

Van Laethem yielded only one hit in the first and second stanzas, and then the Blue and Gold tacked on four more runs in the third to swell the advantage to seven (7-0). Junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier started things off with a one-out double, and then Barker continued her hot streak with an RBI double down the right-field line. With two runners in scoring position, junior second baseman Maryssa Santi hit a two-run triple, and then senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach capped the stanza with an RBI single.

Barker's two-run shot to center and Spanier's RBI single highlighted a three-run fourth inning for the Mountaineers, and the Beacons scored twice in the fifth before Van Lathem forced the final groundout to retire the side and cap the victory.

Barker finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI, while Burchak and Santi added two RBI apiece.

GAME TWO – EOU 1, NCU 0
Anchored by a complete-game shutout from Spence, the Mountaineers came up victorious in game two, 1-0.

Spence tossed five Ks and forced 12 flyouts on the way to collecting her third-career win and first-career shutout.

At the dish, junior shortstop Lena Richards batted 2-for-4, while Barker launched a sacrifice fly in the first inning to drive home T. Gerlach and book the only run of the game.

After EOU took a 1-0 lead in the first, Spence held the Beacons hitless in the first four innings, and she left only three runners stranded for the remainder of the affair.
