Gerlach Twins, EOU Softball Rally to Split With Carroll in Montana

HELENA, Mont. – Seniors Taylor and Jorden Gerlach combined for a 6-for-7 effort at the dish in game two, and the EOU softball team used a seventh-inning rally to defeat Carroll, 3-2, to earn the twinbill split on Friday afternoon.

EOU improved to 16-9 and 10-4 in conference play, and with a win in game one tomorrow, the Mountaineers will clinch their fourth-consecutive series.

GAME TWO – EOU 3, CARROLL 2
T. Gerlach batted 4-for-4, and EOU tallied two runs in the top of the seventh to steal game two by a 3-2 margin.

Junior pitcher Hailey Kline posted a season-high nine strikeouts, and senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker launched a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh for the go-ahead run.

After a two-run homer put the Saints up early, EOU got on the board in the fourth thanks to an RBI single by T. Gerlach to plate junior second baseman Maryssa Santi, who also reached on a single.

Kline held Carroll to only two hits in the next two frames, and then T. Gerlach came through again, this time with the game-tying RBI double to plate junior pinch runner Kaitlyn Reynolds.

Gerlach eventually advanced to third on a passed ball, and then Barker delivered the go-ahead sac fly to give EOU its first lead (3-2) of the doubleheader. Carroll had one last chance to win in walk-off fashion, but Kline mustered two Ks and forced a flyout to cash in the victory.

GAME ONE – CARROLL 7, EOU 3
EOU's comeback bid in game one came up short, as the Mountaineers couldn't overcome a cold start to the day and Carroll (9-8, 7-4 CCC) notched a three-run homer from Kendall Mooney in the seventh to break away.

Senior catcher Alex Shuster launched her first homer of the season and finished the game with two RBI, while J. Gerlach added a fielder's choice RBI for the Blue and Gold.

Shuster's solo bomb put EOU on the board (3-1) in the fifth, and EOU added two more runs in the sixth to pull within one (4-3). Senior designated player Lauren Burchak and junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier opened the frame with hits, and then J. Gerlach delivered a one-out, fielder's choice RBI to plate senior pinch runner Lacey Usabel. Shuster tacked on an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to one (4-3), but EOU went 1-for-4 in its final at-bats of the contest to fall, 7-3.

Senior righty Haylie Van Laethem saw five innings of action and forced 11 groundouts, while Kline registered one strikeout before yielding a three-run homer in the seventh.
