EOU Softball Takes Two from College of Idaho to Complete Series Finale

CALDWELL, Idaho. – The EOU softball team continued its hot streak winning its last 11 of 12 games, sweeping College of Idaho today at Symms Field.

In total on the day, EOU collected 25 hits that produced 14 runs, including three homeruns, taking 3 of 4 games from C of I to cap the weekend series.

 GAME ONE – EOU 6, COI 2
A four-run seventh inning propelled the Mountaineers to a 6-2 win over the Yotes in game one to clinch the series.

Senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker hit a solo homer and finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while both senior left fielder Taylor Gerlach and senior designated player Lauren Burchak went 2-for-4 at the dish.

In the circle, seniors Haylie Van Laethem (four innings) and Hailey Kline (three innings) saw action, combining for four strikeouts.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Barker opened the stanza with a solo bomb to left-center field to tie the game, but the Yotes responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame to regain a one-run (2-1) edge.

The Mountaineers caught a break in the fifth inning, as senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach belted a triple to right field and then scored on a throwing error by the right fielder to make it a 2-2 contest.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Blue and Gold escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam, as Kline notched the final strikeout of the inning to retire the side.

The Yotes went three-up, three-down in the sixth, and EOU took advantage in the seventh with four runs to take control. Junior center fielder Kaitlyn Reynolds started things off with an infield single, and she ultimately scored off an RBI single by senior right fielder Taylor Gerlach. RBI singles by Barker and Burchak, as well as a run by junior shortstop Lena Richards, extended the margin to four (6-2), and Kline yielded only one hit in the seventh to seal the win.

GAME TWO – EOU 8, COI 1

Behind a four-hit complete game from Kline in the circle and two homeruns by Burchak, the Mountaineers cruised past the Yotes, 8-1, completing the sweep on day two.

Burchak finished the game with an efficient 3-for-4 effort at the plate and her two homeruns added to the senior's five RBI on the day, four alone in game two.

After junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier led off the second inning with a double down the left field line, she was brought in to score two batters later courtesy of a J. Gerlach double to left-center. Senior catcher Alex Shuster then made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single.

Barker led off the third with a single and that's when Burchak dug into the box and hit a two-run blast to left-field, giving the Blue and Gold a 4-0 advantage. With J. Gerlach hitting a triple with one away, Shuster collected her second RBI, doubling down the left-field line. After three, the Mountaineers led 5-0.

Over the next three frames, Kline held the Yotes to only one run on two hits, with the only score of the game from C of I coming off a solo homerun.

In the top of the seventh, the Mountaineers tacked onto their lead adding three more runs. The frame was highlighted by Burchak's second homerun of the game, a two-run bomb over the left-field wall.

It was more than enough for Kline to close out the contest, as the senior retired the side in the seventh, en route to earning her ninth win of the year.
