EOU Softball Bounces Back to Earn Twinbill Split With College of Idaho

CALDWELL, Idaho – A 52-minute rain delay prior to game two against College of Idaho didn't faze the EOU softball team, as the Mountaineers bounced back from a one-run heartbreaker with a 7-5 triumph to even the series at one apiece.

GAME TWO – EOU 7, COI 5
Thanks to some sloppy play by the Yotes, EOU surged to a 6-0 lead in game two in the first two innings and never looked back, ultimately holding on for a 7-5 triumph.

The Yotes committed four errors in the first two innings, while the Blue and Gold notched six unearned runs to take control.

Both senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker and junior second baseman Kasidee Lemberger posted two hits apiece, and junior shortstop Lena Richards added a game-high three runs.

With two runners on base in the first, senior designated player Lauren Burchak smacked an RBI double down the left-field line, and then Lemberger added an RBI single with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 2-0. Senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach registered a fielder's choice RBI, and then junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier crossed home plate on a wild pitch to cap the frame.

Leading by four runs (6-2) in the fourth stanza, Barker tacked on an insurance score with an RBI double to drive home Richards and extend the edge to five, and the Mountaineers ultimately held on for a two-run win.

Senior righty Haylie Van Laethem improved to 5-3 on the year, compiling two strikeouts and forcing 16 groundouts in seven innings.

GAME ONE – COI 4, EOU 3
College of Idaho's Martha Tooley belted a walk-off, two-out RBI single, and the Yotes took game one by a 4-3 margin.

EOU (13-8, 8-3 CCC) scored two runs in the top of the first to start the day, as Spanier mustered a two-run single, but the Mountaineers only managed one hit in the next four frames.

Hailey Chambers homered for the Yotes in the second to make it a one-run game, and College of Idaho (9-12, 6-5 CCC) tacked on two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth, the Blue and Gold struck back with one run on two hits to knot the affair. Lemberger opened the stanza with an infield single, and she ultimately made it home after junior center fielder Kaitlyn Reynolds hit a clutch RBI single to make it three all.

EOU actually had two runners on base in the seventh, but the Mountaineers couldn't score any more runs, and Tooley's game-winning hit sealed the deal for the Yotes.

As a team, the Blue and Gold went 6-for-29 at the dish, led by Lemberger's 2-for-4 effort. Spanier paced EOU with two RBI, while Reynolds scored the only other run for the Mountaineers.

In the circle, senior pitcher Hailey Kline tossed 6.2 innings, recording six strikeouts in the losing effort.
