Mountaineer Softball Completes Sweep Over Great Falls

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The EOU softball team extended its winning steak to eight games and completed its four game sweep over Great Falls on Saturday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field.

EOU (12-7, 7-2 CCC), took both games, winning the first 11-5, and taking the second 8-7 in walk-off fashion during the bottom of the ninth. The Argos (8-10, 1-8 CCC), had a one run lead, 7-6 heading into the bottom of the 7th in game two, but the Blue and Gold were able to score a runner off a wild throw.

Junior pitcher Hailey Kline picked up the win in both games, moving her individual total to 7-4 for the 2017 campaign. On the day, Kline chalked up 10 and two-thirds innings pitched with 10 strikeouts and seven groundouts.

GAME ONE – EOU 11, GF 5
The Mounties got on the board first, in the first when senior first basemen Cheyenne Barker cleared the fences for her first home run of the game. In the second, junior third basemen Chelsea Spanier followed suit, hitting a homer over the left field wall (2-0). That same inning, senior left fielder Taylor Gerlach flew out to right field to bring home her sister, senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach.

The three-run deficit sparked something for the Argos in the top half of the third, as Great Falls tallied four runs, as every single run was brought in off of singles.

In the bottom of the third, refusing to let EOU go down for long, Barker hit her second homer of the game on her second at-bat of the day. Barker's second solo shot tied the game at four, as no other Mountaineer scored in the third.

Great Falls once again took the lead in the fifth off an RBI single, but EOU responded with a seven run fifth inning. Junior second basemen Kasidee Lemberger knocked in two RBIs with a double to center field. J. Gerlach then brought Lemberger home, as the senior hit a homer down the line. That same inning, Barker took a walk to bring in a run, while senior designated-player Lauren Burchak followed with a single for two more RBIs.

The pitching duo of senior Haylie Van Laethem and Kline took the mound for the game, as Van Laethem got the start. However, the senior struggled early, giving up six hits and four earned runs on two and one-third innings pitched. Kline then pitched the rest of the way, grabbing three strikeouts and six force outs, while only giving up a pair of hits and a run.

GAME TWO – EOU 8, GF 7 (NINE INN.)
The Argos got on board first in the first, tallying four runs brought in by a single and a three-run homer.

EOU then responded with a six run bottom of the first, as Barker brought in an RBI on a single, J. Gerlach brought in a run off a walk, senior catcher Alex Shuster doubled down the left-field line for three RBIs, and T. Gerlach reached on a bunt single, adding one.

Later in the top of the third, Great Falls added three more runs to retake the lead, 7-6.

The Mountaineers then tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh, when a throwing error brought in junior second basemen Maryssa Santi. EOU then wrapped up the win in the ninth, after J. Gerlach crossed home on a fielding error.

Senior Alexis Spence got the start on the hill, but after giving up seven earned runs on three innings, the Blue and Gold opted to bring in Kline. The junior then pitched the last six innings, giving up only three hits and zero runs with seven strikeouts.
