McCullough Again Plays Hero with Game-Winner in 83-80 Win Over Corban

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Max McCullough gained possession of the ball with 18 seconds on the clock and the score tied 80-80. The sophomore guard let the clock run down to under five seconds before making his move through the Corban defense, laying the ball in the basket and drawing the foul with 1.9 seconds, eventually giving the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team an 83-80 victory on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

McCullough was the hero for the second-straight night after dropping 35 points on Friday. The sophomore finished with 18 points on Saturday and hit the game-winning shot and tacked on a free-throw to put the Mountaineers (10-2, 2-2 CCC) ahead 83-80 over Corban (8-5, 2-3 CCC) with less than two seconds to play. The defense forced a tough shot for the Warriors on the final possession as EOU celebrated its second win in a row on its home court.

It was another comeback victory for the Blue and Gold who trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half and nine points in the second half. The comeback was the second-straight by double digits for the Mounties who continued to never quit.

Senior wing Austin Winegar had crucial shots down the stretch for EOU as he connected on three three-pointers in the second half and had 16 of his 19 points in the final 20 minutes. Winegar led an incredible second half shooting performance for EOU as the Mounties went 8-for-11 from behind the arc (72.7%). Freshman guard Jordan May and junior guard Said Hersi each hit two three pointers in the second half.

After having to sit with three fouls in the first half, May came out in the second half on fire, shooting 4-for-5 from the field and scoring all 12 of his points. Senior forward Blake O'Donnell provided energy throughout the entire game and posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Junior forward Peter Eke added 10 boards, with three on the offensive glass.

Corban led the game for over 35 minutes of play, but fell for the second-straight night after having leading at halftime. AJ Monterossi was dynamic for the Warriors all game, leading all players with 26 points as he shot 10-for-15 from the field. Caleb Dozier had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Joel Johnson also had 14 points and Chris Martin added 12.

The Warriors shot 15-for-27 in both halves, equaling a very impressive 55.56 shooting percentage. However, the team struggled from the free-throw line, finishing 14-for-26 from the charity stripe.

The Mountaineers evened their conference record at 2-2 and will continue to defend their home court on Wednesday against No. 12 College of Idaho. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
