EOU Defense Dominates in CCC Quarterfinal Shutout of Providence

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's soccer team used a shutdown defensive effort to defeat Providence 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank on Friday evening at the Willamalane Sports Complex.

The Mounties' (11-3-2, 9-1-1) swarming defense allowed just one shot in the match with none on net, giving First Team All-CCC goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell her 10th shutout of the year.

The CCC regular season champions controlled the play throughout the entire match, allowing the only shot in the 16th minute of action before completely shutting down the Argos (6-10-0).

With 11 shots in the first half, the Mountaineers were pushing for the first goal of the match, but struggled to find the back of the net.

Just before halftime, however, senior midfielder Mariana Madrigal chipped a beautiful pass over the Providence defender, landing at the feet of freshman forward Morgan Farrington. The freshman then took it 1-on-1 with the Argos' goalkeeper Dakota Neumann. After an initial save, Farrington corralled her own rebound and sent the second shot into the back of the net.

The goal was Farrington's second of the season after scoring the Mountaineers' first goal of the year on Aug. 28 at No. 3 Vanguard. Both goals for the freshman have been game-winners in 1-0 shutouts.

EOU finished with an 18-1 advantage in shots for the match led by three shots apiece by junior midfielders Taylor Boyer and Natalie Mitchell and junior defender Chelsey Nicol. Sydney Knieriem of the Providence had the team's lone shot. The Argos' season likely ends after their second trip to the CCC Championships in the last three years.

As the tournament's No. 1-seed, Eastern Oregon will face the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals in No. 7 College of Idaho on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Coyotes upset No. 2-seed Rocky Mountain in the quarterfinals on penalty kicks 3-2. The Mounties and Yotes met up on Oct. 20 in Caldwell, Idaho, tying 0-0 after two overtimes.
