No. 7 Mounties Cannot Overcome Slow Start in 79-65 Loss vs. No. 16 UMW

CALDWELL, Idaho. – After a tough start shooting the ball, the No. 7 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team was unable to put together a second half comeback in a 79-65 loss to NAIA Division I and No.16-ranked Montana Western on Saturday in the 18th annual Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic.

The Mountaineers (6-2) went down 18-6 after the first quarter as they were unable to score on a field goal attempt in the opening 10 minutes. All six points came off of free throws. The Blue and Gold shot much better from the second quarter on, but could not make the defensive stops as the Bulldogs shot 61.9 percent from the field in the second half.

EOU got hot offensively in the second half as well, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. Junior guard Maren Herrud had 13 of her 20 points in the final 20 minutes, shooting 5-for-6 from the floor and 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Herrud's 20 points were a career-high for her as a Mountaineer as she transferred out of Southern Utah. Senior forward Mariah Swanson added 10 points in the second half, finishing the game with 17.

With the Mounties down 68-50 in the fourth quarter, the team scored 13 of 15 points to cut the deficit to seven points with 3:02 to play. It was as close as EOU would get, however, falling by 14.

Junior guard Maya Ah You-Dias scored 10 points and led the team with six rebounds after a double-double performance on Friday. Along with Ah You-Dias, senior guard Reece Bauer paced the team with four assists.

The Mounties had a tough time stopping the Bulldogs' Brianna King, who set a program record with 37 points as she shot 13-for-24 from the floor.

The Blue and Gold next start up Cascade Collegiate Conference play, visiting Southern Oregon in Ashland, Oregon, on Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. The team then visits Oregon Tech the following day, also at 4 p.m.
