Women’s Wrestling Takes Down #10 Southern Oregon, Men Fall to Raiders

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon wrestling hosted its second home dual of the season as the women's team was able to win their third straight dual, 27-21 over No. 10 Southern Oregon, while the men fell to the No. 11-ranked Raiders 27-18.

"We quickly got the rhythm to begin with and stuck with it the rest of the dual," said head coach Dustyn Azure. "I was proud of how we performed, there are some stuff that we will practice over and it will be great to see them compete at the Open on Sunday."

Eastern Oregon forfeited matches at the 130-pound weight class, 136-pound, and the heavyweight class, surrendering a 15 points to the Raiders. Likewise, Southern Oregon forfeited the 170-weight class to begin the dual with a 15-5 lead.

The forfeits would not matter for the Mountaineers, however, as they would go onto win three of the four matches. In the 101-pound weight class, Lisa Megargee wasted no time to start the night for the Blue and Gold. The sophomore earned a hard takedown in the final seconds of the first period to give her four points. After a two-point takedown in the second period, Megargee would end up winning by technical fall 10-0.

Up next, freshman Leah Olsen (109) needed both periods to secure an 8-6 decision defeating Nikki Mae. Olsen was up in the first period 6-0 and would hang on in the end, as Mae would gain three takedowns in the final period.

Fifth-ranked Amber Pair (116) won by fall with just two and a half seconds left in the second period. This is Pair's third pin of the season and improves her record to 5-2.

Freshman duo Alexis Cavero and Madisen Bozovich each won by forfeit, giving Eastern Oregon its final 10 points, enough to secure a third win for the women's team. The win gave the Mountaineers the Wagon Wheel trophy for the first time.

Over on the men's side, 10th-ranked Mhar Caballa (125) would need just three takedowns to secure his sixth win of the season as he would go on to defeat Trey Long from Southern Oregon.

"We set the tone well with our lighter weights and after it got to the upper weights we lost our tone and were not confident when on the bottom position," said coach Azure. "We had ourselves sitting on a great spot and just could not finish. Southern Oregon should expect a lot more from us come Sunday at the Spokane Open."

Sophomore Jacob Dupuis would get his second fall of the season, as he was able to roll over freshman Cody Stahl. Dupuis would be up 6-0 at the end of the first period before earning the pin. Starting at the bottom position, the sophomore would only need a reversal followed by a quick pin fall to give the Mounties an 18-6 lead.

At the 157-lb weight class, junior Drake Randall would be the last Mountaineer to secure a win for the team. Randall won by a 6-3 decision against No. 11-ranked Chandler Michael for the Raiders, his first win against a top-20 ranked grappler.

With a strong start to the Blue and Gold lineup, the men's wrestling team would lose momentum and give up the last four matches, giving the Raiders their first win of the season.

Following Friday night's duals, the women's and men's wrestling team continue their weekend stretch as they head down to Spokane, Washington for the Spokane Open starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Convention Center.
