No. 14 Mountaineers Cruise to 6th-Straight Win in Sweep of Multnomah

PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 14-ranked Eastern Oregon volleyball team opened the match fast and never slowed down in a sweep (25-17, 27-25, 25-12) of Cascade Collegiate Conference opponent Multnomah on Saturday night, picking up its sixth-straight victory.
 
The Mountaineers (18-5, 12-2 CCC) jumped out of the gates hitting .381 in the first set with 19 kills to just three errors. Freshman setter Madison Pilon capped the 25-17 set victory with a service ace, her team leading 22nd.
 
EOU looked well in control in set two, leading by as many as six points through the first half. With the Mounties still leading 14-9, Multnomah (6-16, 2-12 CCC) rallied for seven straight points to take a 16-14 lead. The Blue and Gold bounced back with four of their own points to go back ahead 18-16.
 
Later in the set, the Lions had set point leading 25-24, but the Mountaineers answered with three points to take it 27-25 led by two kills from senior outside hitter Amy Arnzen.
 
The Mountaineers went back to their dominant play in set three with a 25-12 victory, holding Multnomah to a -.163 hitting percentage with just two kills and nine errors.
 
Two players reached double-digit kills for the match, led by senior outside hitter Amanda Miller with 13. Sophomore outside hitter Megan Bunn posted 11 with no errors for a .611 hitting percentage.
 
Three Mounties finished with at least 10 digs and assists in the match as EOU showed its overall depth. Freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey led the Blue and Gold with 19 digs, followed by senior Malia Mills with 14 and freshman Aspen Christiansen with 10.
 
Pilon paced EOU with 14 assists while junior setter Sarah Carpenter had 13 and freshman Abby Smith recorded 12.
 
With losses by Corban and College of Idaho over the weekend, the Mounties moved into sole possession of first place in the CCC. Corban is just a half game back at 12-3, followed by C of I at 10-4. EOU visits both teams in the final two weeks of the regular season.
 
The No. 14 Mountaineers are next at home for Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend, hosting Northwest and Evergreen. First set on Friday against Northwest is set for 7 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. start time vs. Evergreen.
