Chavez’s First-Half Penalty Kick Gives EOU Men’s Soccer 1-0 Win Over Multnomah

PORTLAND, Ore. – The EOU men's soccer team (6-5-1, 3-4-1 CCC) three-game losing streak came to a halt Friday afternoon as junior defender Jorge Chavez converted on a penalty kick in the first period which ultimately gave the squad a 1-0 win over Multnomah (2-11, 0-9 CCC) at Delta Park.

Through the first 20 minutes of play, the EOU offense dominated and led the shot category, launching six shots with three coming on goal. One minute later, the Blue and Gold broke through with the first tally of the game. After MU fouled inside the penalty box, Chavez was called upon to take his second penalty kick of the season (0-1 on pk attempts this year) and capitalized to put the Mounties on the board.

For the remaining 25 minutes of regulation, EOU continued to press the Lion's defense, recording seven shots. Senior forward Fredy Rodriguez nearly made it a 2-0 match in the 43rd but came up empty as the Mounties led 1-0 after one stanza, hold a 15-4 shot advantage.

In the 53rd minute, senior midfielder Carlos Peregrina rifled his second shot on frame but was denied this time by a different keeper, Manuel Guillermo-Olivares – starting keeper JohnMark Townsend was substituted after the EOU goal.

Looking to preserve the shutout, the EOU backline remained in control and suffocated the Multnomah offense, holding the Lions to one shot. That shot came in the last minute of action and although it was on target, freshman keeper Alex Mitchell was in position for his third save of the night.

Peregrina and senior forward Julian Wells led EOU with four shots apiece. In net, Mitchell picked up his first collegiate win and shutout.
