Historic Season Ends for No. 6 EOU Volleyball in Quarterfinals of NAIA National Championships

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – A record-breaking season for the sixth-ranked EOU volleyball team came to a close on Friday night, as the Mountaineers dropped a three-set (28-26, 25-20, 25-16) decision to No. 3 Hastings in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championships.

The 2016 campaign featured a school-record 32 wins, as well as Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regular-season and tournament titles.

Hastings (31-3) simply had a little more gas left in the tank, compiling 11 team blocks and eight service aces to go along with a .271 clip. The Mountaineers had three set points in the first stanza but never could put the Broncos away.

In her final outing as a Mountaineer, senior hitter Makayla Lindburg led the squad with 14 kills, bringing her season total to 288. She also had 10 digs and one block assist. Senior middle hitter Kasaundra Tuma tallied eight kills for the Blue and Gold, while senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain booked one last double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs. EOU saw those three and senior outside hitter Sierra Linke (eight digs) don the Blue and Gold one last time.

Sophomore libero Holli Mullins collected 18 digs, while junior middle hitter Madisen Garlie chipped in four kills and three blocks (one solo).

In the first set, EOU (32-3) overcame a four-point deficit to take a 20-19 lead after Lindburg smacked one into the hardwood. Hastings, however, always seemed to have an answer, matching the Mountaineers point-for-point to keep it close. At 23 all, junior right-side hitter Isabelle Statkus hammered one down to notch set point, but the Broncos mustered a side-out and later fought off two more set points before Casey Krolikowski registered two-straight kills to win the set for Hastings.

The Blue and Gold opened the second frame with a 3-1 run thanks to a solo block by Garlie and kills by Tuma and Lindburg. Hastings responded with six of the next 10 to tie it at seven, and the Broncos used the momentum to log a 13-7 burst to go up by six (20-14). EOU pulled to within three twice, but Hastings managed to take the frame, 25-20.

Once again, the Mountaineers hung tough early, evening the third set at four apiece after a kill by Tuma. Hastings used a 10-3 run to double-up (14-7) the Blue and Gold, and although Linke delivered an ace to pull EOU to within six (22-16) and force a timeout, the Broncos tallied three straight to keep the Mountaineers at bay.
