No. 16 EOU Men’s Basketball Holds Off Corban in Offensive Showdown, 118-107

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Senior guard Bryan McGriff led five Mountaineers in double figures with a season-high 30 points and 15 rebounds, and the 16th-ranked EOU men's basketball team collected its first win as a top-25 team, defeating Corban, 118-107.

Friday's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) showdown was simply an offensive clinic, as the squads combined to shoot over 52 percent from the field. EOU dished out a season-high 23 assists and went 30-for-41 from the charity stripe.

Senior guard Kentrell Washington added 21 points, nine boards, and six assists with only one turnover, while junior guard Blake O'Donnell was key in the final moments for EOU, totaling 18 points off the bench, 15 of which came in the second half.

Three other players tallied double figures for EOU, as junior guard Cole Ashby (16), freshman sharpshooter Max McCullough (11), and junior wing Austin Strock (10) made contributions.

After Corban struck first, EOU tossed in 10 unanswered points in a little over a minute. McGriff netted a three and then junior wing Austin Winegar scored on the fast break to put the Mountaineers up double digits (15-4), and two more buckets made it a 12-point (19-7) game at the 15:57 mark of the opening stanza.

Moments later, EOU turned to the long ball, drilling three jumpers from downtown on consecutive possessions, including a pair from Strock. Up 35-19, Ashby swooshed two three-pointers in a row to stretch the gap to 22 (41-19) at the 8:33 mark.

The Mountaineers led by as many as 27 (63-36) in the first half after McGriff netted a jumper from downtown, and the home squad ultimately took a 65-45 lead into the locker room.

In the second stanza, Corban came out of the gates with a 22-12 run to close the gap to 10 (77-67), but EOU fired back with four quick points by O'Donnell. The Warriors managed to hang around thanks to the prolific scoring of Chris Martin, who finished with a game-high 33 points.

Clinging to an 89-85 advantage with just under seven minutes left, EOU netted seven straight to pull away. O'Donnell notched a three-point play the old fashion way on a post up, and then Washington added another basket before O'Donnell scored again to cap the run to stretch the lead back to double digits (96-85).

Two-straight three's by Ashby put EOU up 13 (102-89) with 3:33 left, and the Mountaineers went 9-for-10 at the line in the final 51 seconds to stamp the victory.
