EOU Volleyball Opens Pool Play Tuesday

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The sixth-ranked EOU volleyball team will look to feed off the momentum of winning both the regular-season and conference tournament championships of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC), as the Blue and Gold opens pool play of the NAIA National Championships on Tuesday afternoon at the Tyson Events Center.
 
The Mountaineers will begin pool play tomorrow against Coastal Georgia at 1 p.m. CT, and the top two squads from each pool will reach the elimination round.

Snapshot: The Mountaineers are enjoying their best season in program history, carding a 28-2 record, including a 12-0 mark at Quinn Coliseum. For the first time in school history, EOU won a conference tournament championship, and the team also reaped its second straight outright league title. The Blue and Gold ranks in the top 10 nationally in four statistical categories, including assists per set (12.70 – 5th), hitting percentage (.276 – 5th), kills per stanza (13.85 – 6th), and blocks per set (2.53 – 7th).
 
Senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain is eighth in the NAIA in assists per set (10.98), while junior middle hitter Madisen Garlie tallies 1.31 rejections per frame (8th, NAIA). One of EOU's two losses this season came in its season opener to Westmont, which is currently ranked first in the country.
 
The Mountaineers are coming off a five-set (20-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 15-13) over Corban, another team that made it to Sioux City. This will be EOU's third consecutive trip to the Tyson Events Center. Last season, the Blue and Gold went 1-2 in a pool that featured then-ranked No. 1 Lindsey Wilson.

Snapshot: Georgetown is the second-highest rated squad in EOU's pool, tabbed No. 12 after finishing second in the Mid-South Conference behind No. 4 Lindsey Wilson. The Tigers were one of 20 squads to earn a direct bid to Sioux City. In the conference title match, Georgetown took Lindsey Wilson to five sets before dropping the final frame, 16-14. Sarah Bell ranks ninth in the country in assists per set (10.91), while Jenny Powell hammers down a team-best 3.73 kills per frame. Georgetown is 18th in the NAIA in blocks per set (2.28), but has dropped three of the latest seven matches.

Snapshot: The Orediggers are making their first appearance at the NAIA National Championships in 28 years. Montana Tech had to defeat Indiana South Bend in straight sets (25-12, 25-16, 25-22) in order to make it to the final site. Bailie Cortner ranks 10th in the NAIA in hitting percentage (.368), and she also leads the team in blocks per set with 1.16 (20th, NAIA). At the Big Sky Challenge earlier this season, the Orediggers went 3-1, defeating Corban but losing to College of Idaho in five. The squad has won 14 of the last 16 matches.

Snapshot: The Mariners are making their third straight trip to Sioux City, coming off a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-6) triumph over St. Andrews. Coastal Georgia entered its conference tourney as the No. 3 seed and had to defeat Mobile and Bethel to make it to nationals. Kyra White leads the squad and ranks sixth in the nation with a .395 clip, posting 3.1 kills per set. Cayley Meiners dishes out 10.84 assists per stanza, while Alyssa Keeve collects 3.4 digs per frame. Coastal Georgia has gone 26-4 after starting the season 3-4. Twenty-one of the team's 29 victories were won in three sets.
