EOU Women’s Hoops Suffers Heartbreaker at Whitman, 55-53

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Despite a concerted effort on the glass, the No. 17 EOU women's basketball team couldn't overcome a cold shooting night, resulting in a 55-53 setback to NCAA Division III foe Whitman at the Sherwood Center on Wednesday night.

Senior guard Darian Gasseling stood out for EOU (4-1), shooting 5-for-11 from the field en route to netting a game-high 16 points. She also drilled three of the Mountaineers' six triples. Meanwhile, junior guard Maya Ah You tossed in 10 points and pulled down six boards.

After falling down by nine (34-25) at halftime, the Blue and Gold chipped away in the third, outscoring the Blues, 13-10, in the stanza. Both Gasseling and Ah You drilled three's, and junior forward Stormee Van Belle notched a putback to help launch an 11-2 EOU run to knot the game at 36 with 5:44 left in the third.

Whitman recollected itself, ultimately stretching its margin back to eight (49-41) in the fourth, but Gasseling responded with four straight points, and then senior guard Donniesha Webber tossed in a triple to keep the Mountaineers in it.

With 28 seconds left, Ah You scored a layup to pull EOU to within one (54-53), and after the Blues went 1-for-2 at the line, the Mountaineers got two chances to score in the final seconds before coming up short.

Despite the setback, EOU outrebounded Whitman, 59-47, and held the Blues to a 17.4 percent (4-for-23) clip from beyond the arc.
