TITLE BOUND: No. 7 EOU Volleyball Downs (RV) College of Idaho, 3-1

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Third time's a charm. Four players posted double-figure kills, and the No. 7 EOU volleyball team ended its two-year tournament exit curse vs. College of Idaho, as the Mountaineers pulled off a four-set (26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16) triumph over the Yotes on Friday night in the semifinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Championship presented by U.S. Bank.

Senior hitter Makayla Lindburg swung for a match-high 16 kills, while senior hitter Kasaundra Tuma, junior outside hitter Amanda Miller, and junior middle hitter Madisen Garlie tallied 11 kills apiece. Lindburg also dove for a team-best 18 digs.

EOU (27-2) was outstanding defensively, totaling 81 digs and nine team blocks. Sophomore libero Holli Mullins (16), junior defensive specialist Malia Mills (12), and senior outside hitter Sierra Linke (11) each collected double-figure digs.

The CCC Player of the Year lived up to expectation, as senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 50 assists to go along with 15 digs and six kills.

In the first stanza, the two squads were neck-and-neck until the very end when EOU launched a 5-1 run to go up by four (22-18) after a block assist by Tuma and Lindburg. College of Idaho (20-10), however, continued to battle, eventually tying the set at 24 apiece. The Yotes yielded an attack error, and then Miller hammered one down to grant EOU the early edge in the heated rivalry.

College of Idaho, the four-time defending tourney champs, wasted no time attaining a 9-3 lead in the second set. The Mountaineers began to chip away, as Miller and Garlie booked kills to spark a 19-9 run to give EOU a four-point (22-18) advantage. At set point (24-20), Chamberlain dished to Tuma for the tally to make it a 2-0 contest.

EOU looked comfortable in the third frame, going up by three (15-12) after a kill by Garlie and Yote attack error. But College of Idaho refused to accept the sweep, plating 12 of the next 21 to snag set point (24-21). A Garlie kill kept EOU in it, but the Yotes ultimately stole the frame, 25-22, to extend the match.

A packed and anxious Quinn Coliseum cheered EOU to a 12-8 advantage after kills by Tuma and junior right-side hitter Isabelle Statkus. College of Idaho pulled to within one (14-13) before Garlie, Chamberlain, and Lindburg recorded kills to kickstart an 8-2 run to pull away. Statkus pounded one down on the right side to muster match point (24-16), and then Tuma popped one into the hardwood to seal the victory.
