Tuma, Miller Carry No. 6 EOU Volleyball Past Pesky Northwest Christian, 3-0

EUGENE, Ore. – Junior outside hitter Amanda Miller and senior middle hitter Kasaundra Tuma tied for match-high honors with 13 kills apiece, and the sixth-ranked EOU volleyball team overcame deficits in the second and third sets on the way to fighting past Northwest Christian, 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-20).

With the triumph, the Blue and Gold improved to 18-1 and 11-0 in CCC action. As a team, the Mountaineers swung for a .217 clip and posted eight team blocks.

In addition to Miller and Tuma, senior setter Rachelle Chamberlain played key for EOU, tallying five kills, 35 assists, and 11 digs. She now has six double-doubles on the year. Meanwhile, sophomore libero Holli Mullins collected a match-high 16 digs – her 10th double-figure digs effort of the season.

Tuma paced EOU in the first set with five kills, and the Mountaineers closed the frame with an 8-2 run to pull away. Tuma spiked one into the hardwood to cap a 17-7 burst to open the stanza, but the Beacons responded with six straight to make it a contest. At set point (24-15), Chamerblain dumped one over the net to put EOU on top, 1-0.

In the second set, EOU faced a 23-20 deficit before it rallied to net six of the last seven points to steal the stanza. After the Beacons used a Mountaineer attack error to reach set point (24-23), Miller posted a critical kill to keep EOU in it. Junior hitter Madisen Garlie teamed up with senior hitter Makayla Lindburg for the block assist to muster set point (25-24) for the Mountaineers, and then Northwest Christian committed an attack error to yield the frame.

Northwest Christian (6-11, 4-7 CCC) refused to bow down without a fight, carding a 13-9 advantage in the third frame. EOU fired back with 11 of the next 15 to go up by three (20-17), and kills by Tuma and Miller ultimately gave the Blue and Gold the edge, 25-20.
