Big Second Half Lifts No. 17 EOU Women’s Basketball Past Simpson in Season Opener, 74-61

REDDING, Calif. – The No. 17 EOU women's basketball team turned a two-point halftime lead into a 16-point advantage after the third quarter, a run that ultimately propelled the Mountaineers to a 74-61 triumph over Simpson on Saturday night.
 
Junior forward Stormee Van Belle led three Mountaineers in double figures with 18 points and seven boards, including a 16-for-18 effort at the charity stripe. Junior guard Maya Ah You added 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Darian Gasseling tallied 10 points and six assists off the bench.
 
Simpson's Esther Wofford went 10-for-21 from the floor to post 28 points in a losing effort for the Red Hawks (0-1).
 
EOU (1-0) jumped on Simpson early, tallying the first seven points after a three by senior guard Donniesha Webber, jumper by Ah You, and free throw's by Van Belle. The Red Hawks fought back to knot the affair at 19 apiece, but junior guard Alisha Sorensen responded with two-straight three's, and the Blue and Gold ultimately took a two-point (28-26) edge into the locker room.
 
The third stanza was all Blue and Gold, as the Mountaineers led by as many as 17 (54-37) in the quarter after a free throw by Van Belle. EOU's stingy defense forced nine turnovers in the frame as well.
 
Ah You and junior guard Jessica Sexson buried jumpers to put EOU on top by 20 (59-39) at the 7:24 mark of the fourth quarter, and Simpson got as close as 13 (64-51) before Van Belle and Gasseling netted free throws to keep the Mountaineers in front.
