PORTLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team pulled to within three against No. 24 Warner Pacific (WPC) before going nearly six minutes without a field goal midway through the second half, and the Mountaineers ultimately suffered a 91-75 setback in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play on Friday night.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Junior guard Kentrell Washington posted his 16th double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Case Rada and sophomore guard Tate de Laveaga added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Six players scored in double figures for WPC, as Taylor Young and Xavier Cannefax registered 20 points apiece.
THE STORYLINE
The opening eight minutes saw a back-and-forth battle that featured five ties and four lead changes. Junior guard Travis Meeker knocked down a three to give EOU its largest lead of the game (16-11) with 14:13 left, but WPC responded with a 7-0 run. A three by de Laveaga gave the Mountaineers their final lead of the affair (19-18) before the Knights racked up 10 unanswered points to take control of the frame. After falling down by 11 (46-35), Washington tossed in two-straight layups to close the period and keep EOU within striking distance, 46-39.
Washington and freshman guard Caulin Bakalarski netted three's early in the second half, and the Mountaineers pulled to within three (52-49) with 15:02 left in the contest. But that's when things went south for EOU, as the Navy and gold went without a field goal until the 9:12 mark when the deficit had already grown to 13.
Washington tossed in a layup to make it a 68-59 game with 8:51 left, but the Knights (10-4, 6-1 CCC) responded with a 13-4 run to pull away.
