LA GRANDE, Ore. – The (RV) Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team scored 28 points off 25 College of Idaho turnovers, and the Mountaineers raced to a 73-47 victory over the Yotes on Tuesday night at Quinn Coliseum.
EOU won the rebounding battle, 34-30, and the Mountaineers shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) in the second half.
KEY PERFORMANCES
Sophomore guard Payton Parrish registered a game-high 17 points, including five jumpers from beyond the arc. Giving productive minutes off the bench, sophomore forward Mariah Swanson mustered a career-high nine points in just eight minutes of play, while both senior forward Madeline Laan and senior guard Jordan Klebaum chipped in eight points apiece.
Kellie Ross and Madison Pilster scored nine points apiece for the Yotes.
THE STORYLINE
Parrish netted 14 of EOU's 23 first-quarter points to help the squad to an early 11-point advantage. The Washington native shot a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown, and senior guard Maloree Moss recorded four assists in the opening frame.
Parrish, Klebaum and Moss nailed three's in the opening five minutes of the second quarter to give EOU a 33-17 advantage with 4:55 left in the stanza. Two minutes later, junior guard Darian Gasseling found senior forward Nikki Osborne for the left-handed layup to grant the Mountaineers their largest lead (35-17) of the first half.
EOU (13-7, 9-2 CCC) led at the break, 37-22. The Navy and Gold recorded eight three's and scored 16 points off 12 College of Idaho (4-13, 3-8 CCC) turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Laan scored six points and Moss drilled another three to open the third and extend EOU's lead to 22 (46-24) with 6:44 left. EOU continued to push and force turnovers, and with 17 seconds left in the third, senior guard Kelsey Hill found Swanson on the slip for the layup to put the Mountaineers on top, 56-26, going into the fourth.
EOU remained in front by 25 or more during the fourth quarter, and the Mountaineers got good looks on each possession, tallying five assists on eight made field goals. With 13 seconds left, Swanson swooshed a three to cap the 19-point victory.
