LA GRANDE, Ore. – Just two weeks into the 2015 volleyball season, the intensity couldn't be any higher for the Mountaineers. After collecting a pair of wins at the EOU Invitational, the No. 6 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team will head to Helena, Mont., for four matches, including a showdown vs. No. 5 Rocky Mountain College.
On Wednesday afternoon, the NAIA announced that the battle between the top 10 heavyweights would be the first installment of the NAIA Volleyball Match of the Week.
Scouting Rocky Mountain
Rocky Mountain (2-2) won the Frontier Conference crown last season, as the Battlin' Bears registered a 14-0 record in league play. At the 2014 Big Sky Invitational, Rocky Mountain took down a pair of top five teams en route to earning the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA. The Battlin' Bears kept the ranking for 11-consecutive weeks.
Senior middle blocker Mariah Stiffarm leads the way for Rocky Mountain with 4.1 kills per set, and she boasts the second-highest kills (81) in the NAIA. Her 24 total blocks ranks fourth nationally.
The four opponents Rocky Mountain has faced this season are either receiving votes or ranked in the top 25.
EOU Picking Up Where it Left Off in 2014
Last weekend, EOU (2-0) continued its dominance at Quinn Coliseum after a pair of three-set triumphs over two Frontier Conference foes. The Mountaineers have claimed 32 of their last 34 home matches.
Junior setter Rachelle Chamberlain tallies 11 assists per set, while both junior right side hitter Kasaundra Tuma and sophomore outside hitter Amanda Miller average at least four kills per set and own a .404-or-higher hitting percentage.
2015 Big Sky Invitational
EOU will open the invitational with two matches on Friday (Aug. 28) against (RV) Carroll College and Great Falls. On Saturday (Aug. 29), the Mountaineers will square off against Rocky Mountain at 9 a.m. MT, before competing against No. 8 Vanguard at 1 p.m. MT.
