Mountaineer Volleyball Ousts Corban, Wins 14th Straight

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Miller is playing some of the best volleyball of her young career.

Following a 15-kill performance against Northwest Christian last night, Miller swung in for 17 kills in a three-set (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) win over Corban on Saturday evening in the annual Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Match.

"It's been a great couple week of EOU volleyball at home," said head volleyball coach Kaki McLean Morehead. "I'm really proud of how our defense has played in some big games the last couple of weeks and how are hitters are developing their toolbox."

The Mountaineers outhit the Warriors, .292 to .171, and the Navy and Gold registered 10 blocks as a team.

"Now we need to go back to practice and work on some things before we hit the road next weekend," said Morehead.

Key Performances
Miller's 17-kill performance marked a career-best effort in a three-set match.

Junior middle hitter Kasaundra Tuma recorded 12 kills, while junior setter Rachelle Chamberlain dealt a balanced attack with 35 assists, six blocks, and six digs.

With 19 digs on the evening, senior libero Piper Cantrell booked a career-high mark in a three-set match.

For Corban, sophomore outside hitter Amber Parker once again led the way with 19 kills, while freshman setter Madison McLain dished out 39 assists.

The Storyline
After EOU leaped to an 11-6 advantage, the opening set was as fair as they come, featuring six ties between the two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) squads.

With the first frame tied at 22 apiece, Tuma and senior outside hitter Kendra De Hoog swung in for back-to-back kills to lift EOU to set point. Although the Warriors fended off one set point, Chamberlain setup Tuma for the kill to give the Mountaineers a one-set advantage.

Set two mirrored the first in that EOU raced to an early five-point (11-6) lead. Junior outside hitter Kelly Cruise and the rest of the Warriors (8-10, 6-6 CCC) eventually clawed their way back into the stanza, getting as close as two (19-17), but the Mountaineers closed the frame on a 6-2 run to snatch the second set.

EOU hit its best percentage (.406) of the night in the third frame en route to claiming its 13th victory of the 2015 campaign in straight sets. After a kill by junior outside hitter Sierra Linke granted EOU a four-point lead, Corban continued to stick around and eventually got to within one (17-16), but that's as close as the Warriors would get.

With a 22-19 lead, Linke swung in for a pair of kills, and then Tuma teamed up with freshman middle hitter Karlee Hollis for the block assist to put Corban away.

Stats of the Match
17 – Kills by Miller, a career-high in a three-set match.

19 – Digs by Cantrell, a career-best effort in a three-set match.

14 – Straight Wins for EOU.
