Mountaineers Go 2-0 on Day Three of Sport Travel Northwest Challenge

SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 23 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches after defeating Lewis-Clark State and Montana Western on day three of the Sport Travel Northwest Challenge. EOU defeated Lewis-Clark State, 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-15) and defeated Montana Western, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 25-17).
 
Lewis-Clark State
The Mountaineers and Warriors were locked in a tight battle. With the set tied at 3-3, Casey Loper gave EOU the lead, 4-3, after recording her first kill of the match. EOU's lead grew to two points, 5-3, after a Lewis-Clark State attack error.
 
EOU continued to lead by two points, 6-4, when the Warriors offense woke up as Lewis-Clark State scored the next five points to take a three point lead, 9-6. EOU trimmed the lead down to two, 9-7, but the Warriors answered back by scoring seven straight points. EOU could not mount a comeback and dropped set one, 25-17.
 
The Mountaineers came to life in the second set against Lewis-Clark State. The Warriors scored the first point of the set but that would be the only lead they held the rest of the set. EOU held a lead of three, 7-4, early in the contest after an Emily Nay kill.  
 
With EOU ahead, 9-7, EOU scored five straight points to take a seven point lead, 14-7. During the streak Casey Loper recorded two kills. EOU continued to hold a lead of five to six points the rest of the set, and after a Loper kill EOU led 21-15. Amanda Miller scored the last two points to clinch the set for EOU as she recorded a kill and an ace to give EOU the second set, 25-16.
 
The Mountaineers ran away with set three early as EOU scored 11 of the first 13 points of the set. Miller led the Mountaineers to the early lead in the third set as she recorded three kills and two aces during the stretch. Loper followed with two kills.
 
With EOU leading 16-6, the Warriors started to mount a comeback, as they scored five straight points to cut EOU's lead down to five points, 16-11. EOU continued to lead and put after Warriors continued to chip away and after two service aces by Desiree Nielson, EOU's lead was down to three points, 20-17. The Mountaineers did not led the Warriors get any closer as a kill by Nay, Loper and an ace by Rachelle Chamberlain gave EOU set three, 25-19, and a 2-1 lead.
 
Set four started out as a game of runs as both teams strung together points and with the set tied at 5-5, the Mountaineers scored the next four points to take a lead of 9-5. After taking the four point lead, EOU did not look back and continued to slowly extend its lead. After a kill by Isabelle Statkus EOU lead 14-8.
 
EOU grew its lead to eight points, 19-11, after an attack error by Marissa Verduci. Lewis-Clark State continued to battle and scored four straight to trim EOU's lead down to four points, 19-15. The Mountaineers answered to put the game out of reach as they scored five straight points, to put the Warriors down nine points, 24-15. EOU closed out the set and the match on a Chamberlain kill and EOU took the set, 25-16, and the match 3-1.
 
Loper led the Mountaineers with 22 kills in the match and Miller followed with 10. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 40 assists.
 
Montana Western
Eastern Oregon raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set against Montana Western. However, the Bulldogs bounced right back by scoring the next four points to trim EOU's lead to one, 5-4. EOU and Montana Western continued to battle and keep the game close. After two aces by Loper, the Mountaineers held a lead of five, 11-6.
 
The Mountaineers continued to build a lead as they grew the lead to eight points, 18-10, after an ace by Nay. However, the Bulldogs continued to slowly chip away at the lead as they trimmed the EOUs lead down to two points, 23-21. Kasaundra Tuma gave EOU the set, 25-22, after recording a kill.
 
In set two the Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead over the Bulldogs, again. After a kill by Nay and an attack error by Breanne Kelley, EOU led 9-5. However, the lead was short lived as the Bulldogs answered back and took a 13-12 lead.
 
EOU continued to battle in the second set and after a Malia Mills kill and three straight attack errors EOU led 16-13. EOU continued to hold onto its lead until the Bulldogs scored seven straight points to take a 23-18 lead over EOU. The Mountaineers could not come all the way back and dropped the second set, 25-21.
 
Montana Westerns momentum continued early in set three as they started on a 4-1 run. The Mountaineers continued to battle and after a Kendra De Hoog kill, EOU tied the match at 6-6. The Bulldogs answered again and jumped to an 11-8 lead over EOU. However, Eastern Oregon had an answer and battled back to take a 13-12 lead. After regaining the lead, EOU did not look back in the set. The Bulldogs trimmed the lead to one point once, but EOU responded and took the third set, 25-20.
 
The Mountaineers jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the fourth game, as EOU was helped by attack errors by the Bulldogs. Montana Western did not go away easily as they mounted a comeback to cut EOU's lead down to one point, 6-5.
 
With the Mountaineers lead down to one point, EOU slowly started to pull away and grew the lead to five points, 16-11, after a Nay kill. EOU continued to extend its lead and grew the lead to 20-11. Eastern Oregon did not let the Bulldogs get any closer and took set four, 25-17, and the match 3-1.
 
For the second straight match, Loper led the Mountaineers with 22 kills. Kendra De Hoog and Nay followed with eight and six kills respectively. Chamberlain dished out 35 assists in the match.
 
EOU returns to action next Friday, Aug. 29 when they play Biola (Calif.) in the Concordia (Calif.) Labor Day Tournament at 12 p.m.
