Mountaineers Fall Short to Yotes, 67-64

CALDWELL, Idaho – With seven seconds to go the Mountaineers trailed by three points, 67-64, Nicole Redd fired a three up as the clock expired but the shot fell short and the College of Idaho Yotes defeated Eastern Oregon, 67-64.

Brittney Newcomb led the way for EOU with 19 points. Nicole Redd followed with 17 points. EOU shot 33.9 percent from the floor and 29 percent from behind the arc in the contest.

The Mountaineers and Yotes were locked in tight contest for the first eight minutes. Both teams traded leads and the largest lead during this stretch was three points. After a pair of free throws by Elisha Hensey the Yotes and Mountaineers were tied at 15.

College of Idaho started to pull away at this point as they outscored EOU, 7-2, during the next three minutes of the contest to pull ahead by five points, 22-17. EOU continued to chip away at the Yotes' lead and trimmed the lead down to four points, 24-20.

Eastern Oregon answered with a 7-2 run of their own to take a one point, 27-26, lead with 6:44 left in the first half. The game remained tight for the rest of the half, as there were two ties but EOU continued to pull ahead and hold onto the lead. With 12 seconds left in the first half, Madeline Laan hit a pair of free throws put EOU ahead by two points, 36-34, to go into halftime.

The Mountaineers started to pull away early in the second half, as EOU scored five of the first seven points of the second half to take an 41-36 lead. However, Eastern Oregon's lead did not last long as the Yotes continued to battle and after an Erica Martinez layup tied the game at 48-48.

A three pointer by Payton Parrish gave EOU a three point lead, 51-48. The Yotes answered back by scoring the next seven points to take a 55-51 lead. EOU battled back and tied the game at 57-57 after a pair of free throws from Newcomb.

The Mountaineers found themselves down two points with just over two minutes to go in the game, but Redd tied the game at 62-62, after hitting a layup. College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon both scored on each of their next possessions to keep the game tied with 1:29 left.


Sienna Edmunson broke the tie with a pair of free throws, to put the Yotes ahead, 66-64, with a minute left in the contest. On Eastern Oregon's next possession, Newcomb had a costly turnover and Elisha Hensey hit one of two free throws to take a three point lead, 67-64. The Mountaineers had one last chance to tie the game but Redd's three pointer feel short as the clock expired.

Eastern Oregon returns to action next Friday, Feb. 14 when they travel to Salem, Ore. to face Corban University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
