Men's Basketball Weekly Notes: Concordia and Warner Pacific

This Weekend
This weekend the Mountaineers host Concordia (Ore.) on Friday and Warner Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday. Both games tip at 7:30 p.m. PT. If you brining your Friday night tickets to the game on Saturday, you will receive half off your ticket prices.
 
Last Time Out
The last time the Mountaineers took the court was the weekend of Dec. 19th and 20th. The Mountaineers opened the weekend with a loss to No. 16 Southern Oregon University, 114-104, in overtime on Friday evening. De'Sean Mattox led the way with a game-high 42 points. This is the second-consecutive game that Mattox has scored over 40 plus points in. In the game, Mattox was 6-for-13 from behind the arc and was 18-of-22 from the free throw line. Bryan McGriff added 31 for the Mountaineers. EOU looked to rebound the next night at Oregon Tech. Eastern Oregon used a strong second half to come close but could not overcome an early first half deficit as Oregon Tech defeated EOU, 82-74, on Saturday Night on Danny Miles Court. Bryan McGriff led the Mountaineers with 25 points on 10-of-21 shooting. De'Sean Mattox added 15 for the EOU, who suffered their second straight defeat. Deonta Edwards and Michael Crane rounded out the double-figure scorers for EOU with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Scouting the Opponents
Concordia

The Cavaliers of Concordia University enter this weekend with a record of 11-2 and 2-1 in CCC action. Concordia is currently on a three game-winning streak. In their last game on Dec. 19th, the Cavaliers defeated Warner Pacific, 89-86, in overtime. Concordia is a perfect 5-0 on the road this season. In the last Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the Cavaliers were ranked No. 13. The Cavaliers have four players scoring in double-figures on the season, led by Tyler Velasquez, who is averaging 15.9 points per game. As a team, the Cavaliers average 82.1 points per game, while allowing 72.5 points per game.
Warner Pacific
Warner Pacific Knights enters this weekend with a record of 11-3 and 2-1 in the CCC. The Knights dropped their last game on Dec. 19 in overtime to Concordia, 89-86. The loss to Concordia snapped a five game-winning streak for the Knights. Warner Pacific is averaging 79.1 points per game and allowing 63.6 points per game. Doug Thomas leads the way for the Knights as he is averaging 17.9 points per game. Coletun Tarr follows as he is averaging 15.5 points per game.
 
Block Party
The Mountaineers continue to lead the nation in blocks per game. On the season, EOU is blocking 6.4 shots per game. Leading the way is Kalvin Johanson, who is second in the NAIA who is blocking 3.3 shots per game. Concordia (Neb.) is second in the nation in blocks per game as they average 5.93 blocks.
 
40 Point Games
Senior, De'Sean Mattox score a season-high 44 points on Dec. 13th against Multnomah University.  Mattox followed that performance with a 42 point game against Southern Oregon to collect back-to-back 40 point games.
 
Three-Pointers
The Mountaineers are shooting 40.6 percent from behind the arc on the season. EOU has recorded seven games this season, where they have made 10 or more three pointers. On Dec. 13, EOU made a season-high 18 three-pointers against Multnomah. On the season, EOU is averaging 10.8 three-pointers per game, third best in the NAIA. Leading the way is De'Sean Mattox, who is averaging 3.7 three-pointers per game, second best in the nation.
 
What's Up Next
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Jan. 9 when they travel to College of Idaho. EOU remains on the road on Saturday as they travel to Walla Walla University.
