LEWISTON, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures in the, 90-74, victory over Simpson University in the LC Classic.
As a team, the Mountaineers (9-3) shot 48 percent from the floor. Leading the way was
Madeline Laan and
Larissa Quintana, who both scored, a team-high, 13 points, apiece. Laan shot six-for-eight from the field.
Jordan Klebaum followed, scoring 12 points, and
Kelsey Hill rounded out the double-figure scorers for EOU with 10.
Esther Wofford led the way for the Red Hawks (1-13), with a game-high 36 points on 12-of-21 shooting.
The Mountaineers and Red Hawks were locked in a game of runs to start the contest. EOU scored the first four points of the game, but Simpson answered back by scoring the next four. With the game tied at 4-4, The Mountaineers went on a 6-0 run capped by a
Maloree Moss layup putting EOU ahead, 10-4. The Red Hawks answered right back tying the game at 10-10, after their own run of 6-0.
EOU and the Red Hawks stayed close during the first half, as a field goal by Laan tied the game at 17-17. After Eastern Oregon tied the game, Simpson scored the next five points, taking a 22-17 lead, their biggest lead of the game.
Eastern Oregon responded over the final seven minutes of the half. EOU went on a 23-3 run to take a 40-25 lead at halftime. The Mountaineers held the Red Hawks to one field goal over the final seven minutes, and scoreless for the last four minutes and four seconds of the half.
Over the first four minutes of the second half, EOU went on a 19-4 run to increase their lead to 30 points, 59-29, after a three-pointer by Klebaum. Eastern Oregon continued to extend their lead to as many as 34 points, 68-34, with 13:39 left, after a Laan field goal.
Eastern Oregon held a 31 point lead for the next five minutes of the contest. A field goal by Wofford trimmed the EOU lead down to 29 points, 78-49. It looked as if the Red Hawks were going to start battling back, as they trimmed the lead to 25 points, 82-57, with 6:19 left in the half.
Trailing by 25 points, Simpson went on a 17-4 run trimming Eastern Oregon's lead down to 12 points with a minute to go in the contest. EOU scored the final four points of the game and defeated Simspon, 90-74.
EOU returns to action tomorrow, Dec. 14 when they play Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho at 2 p.m.
