Click here This WeekThis week the Mountaineers will play in Pool B of the NAIA National Championship, presented by J&L Enterprises at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
National ChampionshipThe Eastern Oregon University won their first ever NAIA Volleyball National Championship, presented by J&L Enterprises. EOU was victorious over Menlo (Calif.), 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-19) in EOU's opening round match. With the victory, EOU advanced to the Final Site of the National Championship.
Pool PlayEOU will be in Pool B with Park (Mo.), Grand View (Iowa) and Evangel (Mo.). Eastern Oregon will open pool play against Grand View on Dec. 2 at 3:15 p.m. CT. The next Day EOU will face Park at 1 p.m. CT. Eastern Oregon will wrap up pool play by playing Evangel on Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. CT. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the single-elimination bracket starting Dec. 5.
Looking at the Opponents
Grand ViewThe Vikings of Grand View University comes to Sioux City as the fourth at-large team qualify. They also received the bye to the final site as they finished No. 11 in the final coaches poll. This is the Vikings fourth appearance in the national championship. They currently hold a record of 6-5 in the event. Their last appearance came last season. Grand View holds a record of 26-13.
ParkPark comes to Sioux City as the only unbeaten team remaining in NAIA volleyball. The Pirates (34-0) won both the American Midwest Conference (AMC) regular-season and tournament titles en route to an automatic berth. Park has dropped only two sets throughout the entire season and swept the last eight contests heading into the event.
EvangelEvangel qualified for the NAIA Volleyball National Championship by winning the Heart of America Athletic tournament Championship. This is the first appearance for Evangel since 2009. Evangel advanced to the final site by defeating Wayland Baptist (Texas.), and they were the only road team to win an opening round game. The victory was the first ever for the Crusaders in the national championship. Evangel currently holds a record of 26-11.
CCC AwardsThis season, EOU took home the CCC Player of the Year, Libero of the Year and Coach of the Year. For the second straight season
Casey Loper was named CCC Player of the year.
Jessalyn Smith was named Libero of the Year and
Kaki McLean Morehead was named Coach of the Year. Earning First Team All-CCC Honors for EOU this year was Loper, Smith, and
Rachelle Chamberlain.
Kills RecordOn Nov. 14, in the CCC Semifinals,
Casey Loper broke the single season kill record at Eastern Oregon. Currently, Loper has recorded 424 on the season. The previous mark was set in 1992 by Becky Aldred with 397.
