Volleyball Stunned by Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team dropped their first match since, Sept. 26, on Saturday evening as Concordia University defeated EOU, 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 20-25,11-25).

Casey Loper recorded a game-high 18 kills to lead the Mountaineers. Amanda Miller followed with 16 kills. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out 47 assists on the night, while Jessalyn Smith recorded a game-high 24 digs.

In a highly contested first set the Mountaineers and Cavaliers were locked in a close battle. The first set saw six ties and three lead changes. EOU held an early two point lead, 7-5, after a Miller ace. The lead did not last long as Concordia answered back by scoring the next four points to take a two point lead, 9-7.

After Concordia took the two point lead in the first set, the Cavaliers held the lead for the rest of the way. EOU continued to battle but could not get closer than two points. EOU dropped the set one, 25-20.

The Mountaineers battled back in the second set of the game. Early in the set, neither team took control and the largest lead was two points. With Concordia leading, 17-14, the Mountaineers slowly started mount their comeback. EOU scored 11 of the last 16 points, taking set two, 25-22.

Like the first two sets of the match, set three was no different. There was11 ties and six lead changes. With the score tied at 14-14, the Cavaliers slowly started to pull away from EOU. Concordia took a 20-17 lead and did not let the Mountaineers back into the set. EOU fell 25-20 and found themselves down, two sets to one.

Concordia took control of the fourth set from the start and lead the entire way, EOU falling behind 11-3. The Mountaineers had no answer for the Cavaliers, who hit .364 to the Mountaineers' .057, in the fourth set. The Cavaliers took set four, 25-11, and the match over EOU.
 
EOU returns to Quinn Coliseum on Friday, Oct. 31 when they host Oregon Tech at 6 p.m.
