EOU Sweeps Geoducks

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team recorded their fifth straight sweep on Saturday afternoon, as they swept Evergreen, 25-15, 25-19, 25-8.

Casey Loper led the Mountaineers with a game-high 14 kills. Isabelle Statkus and Amanda Miller followed with eight and seven, respectively. Rachelle Chamberlain dished out a match-high 33 assists. Nicole Pittelkau led Evergreen with eight kills.

In the first set, the Mountaineers slowly started to pull away from the Geoducks. EOU led by two, 5-3, before extending their lead to seven, 13-6, after an attack error by the Geoducks. The lead continued to grow for EOU in the first set and after a service error by Brandee Victorino, EOU led 21-13. Loper ended the first set for the Mountaineers, as she recorded a kill to give EOU set one, 25-15.

The Mountaineers offense came out swinging in set two. EOU raced out to an early 8-3 lead after a Loper kill. With the score 21-13, Eastern Oregon, the Geoducks slowly started to claw back into the set. Evergreen won five of the next six points, to trim the EOU lead to five, 22-17. That would be as close as the Mountaineers let the Geoducks get and EOU took a 2-0 lead after winning set two, 25-19.

Eastern Oregon used another quick start in the third set and led, 9-1, after a Loper kill. Evergreen started to chip away at the lead early but could not get closer than six points. With EOU ahead, 12-6, the Mountaineers went on a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 18-8. Leading by 10 points, the Mountaineers did not let the Geoducks score another point in the set and EOU took set three, 25-8.

EOU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 17th when they host College of Idaho at 7 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum. Evergreen returns to action next weekend when they host Concordia and Warner Pacific.
