Hot Shooting Knights Down Mountaineers

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team dropped its second straight contest Saturday evening when the Mountaineers were defeated by Warner Pacific College, 72-57. Warner Pacific shot 64 percent in the second half.

The Mountaineers saw a trio of players score in double figures led by Tony Eackles Jr's 14 points. Craig Tucker and Kevin Attila followed with 12 and 11 points respectively.

The Mountaineers and Knights played a highly contested first half of action that saw both teams battling for the lead. EOU built a four point lead, 8-4, after a Tony Eackles Jr. jumper. The lead did not last long as the Knights answered right back by scoring the next six points to take a two point lead, 10-8.

The game remained close as both teams traded the lead for the next four minutes of the game. With EOU leading, 15-13, Ryan Parks hit a three pointer giving the Knights the lead. Warner Pacific continued to add points and grew the lead to six points, 19-13.

The lead was cut in half after a three pointer by Kevin Attila and EOU continued to mount a comeback. With 4:30 left before halftime, Eackles hit a three pointer cutting the Knights lead to one point, 20-19. Eastern Oregon scored the next five points to cap off a 9-0 run after an Eackles made one of two from the line.

However, EOU did not score for the last 1:55 of the half and Warner Pacific scored seven points to take a 27-24 lead into halftime.

The Knights continued to add to its lead starting the second half, as they held EOU from scoring for the first three minutes of the half. During this time, Warner Pacific scored six points to take a 33-24 lead. EOU trimmed the lead to six points after an Eackles three pointer.

With the Knights ahead, 39-31, Attila hit a three pointer trimming the lead down to five points, 39-34. Warner Pacific continued to build its lead and stretched the lead back to 10 points, 44-34. However, the Mountaineers would not go away as they continued to battle.

With EOU down, 44-37, the Knights led the Mountaineers scoreless for the next two and a half minutes. While holding EOU scoreless, the Knights scored seven points to take a 51-31 lead. Warner Pacific continued to build its lead to 17 points, 61-44, after a Marcus Moore three pointer.

The Mountaineers continued to battle and it looked as if they would mount a comeback. However, the Knights continued to hold onto its double digit led and EOU fell to the Knights, 72-57.

Eastern Oregon returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 7 when they travel to College Park, Wash. to face Walla Walla University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
