PORTLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team shot 57 percent in the second half but it was not enough to mount a comeback as the Concordia University Cavaliers defeated EOU, 93-79, Friday evening.
Eastern Oregon had five players score in double-digits led by Tony Eackles Jr. with 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Craig Tucker followed with 15 points. Trevor Phillips and Derek Maloney scored 13 points apiece. Rounding out the double figure scorers was Kevin Attila with 11 points.
EOU's offense started off shooting the ball cold as they went the first four minutes of the contest without a field goal. With 15:49 left in the first half, Tony Eackles Jr. hit a three pointer giving EOU its first basket of the game. However, the Mountaineers found themselves down seven after that as Concordia scored the first ten points of the game.
Concordia continued to dominate the game and grew its lead to 13 points, 19-6, after a layup by Anthony Holton. The Cavaliers continued to hold a commanding lead as Adam Herman hit a pair of free throws to extend its lead to 21-8.
The Cavaliers extended its lead to 25-11 before EOU started to mount a comeback. Kevin Attila got the Mountaineers on a roll as he hit back to back three pointers to put EOU down 27-14. EOU continued to battle and cut the Cavaliers lead down to 10 points, 31-21, after a three pointer by Derek Maloney.
The Mountaineers were able to bring down the Cavaliers' lead down to eight points, 35-27, after a Kyllian Wood layup. That would be as close as EOU would get before halftime and Concordia grew its lead back to 10 points, 41-31 going into halftime.
Eastern Oregon continued to battle and attempt its comeback in the second half. However, after the first three minutes the Mountaineers found themselves down 13 points, 47-34. After an Eackles three pointer and a Derek Maloney layup, EOU found themselves down nine points, 48-39.
The Mountaineers continued to battle and after a three pointer by Eackles, the Mountaineers had trimmed the Cavaliers lead down to three points, 52-49. After Eastern Oregon cut the lead to three points, Concordia went on a 7-0 run to extend its lead to eight points, 57-49, with 11:13 left in the second half.
Eastern Oregon continued to battle and was able to trim Concordia's lead down to eight points, 59-51, after an Eackles layup. However, each time the Mountaineers cut the Cavaliers lead down to single digits, Concordia answered right back and with 8:48 left in the game, Concordia led, 65-53.
With EOU down, 65-53, EOU scored the next six points, putting EOU down six, 65-59, after a three pointer by Craig Tucker. The Cavaliers grew the lead back to 11 points, 75-64, after a three pointer by Tyler Velasquez.
The Mountaineers looked as if they had one more run in them as a layup by Maloney put EOU down, 77-68, with 4:23 left in the second half. However, EOU did not get any closer and fell by a score of 93-79.
EOU returns tomorrow, Sat. Jan. 4 when they play at Warner Pacific. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
