Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 21 Eastern Oregon University concluded its road trip to Florida with a 2-0 day by defeating Mobile, 3-1, (28-26, 25-9, 23-25, 25-14) and upsetting No. 10 Embry-Riddle (Fla.), 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 25-10). With the wins the Mountaineers improved to 9-2 on the season.

Stefani Sorensen led the Mountaineers on the day with 31 kills and Casey Loper followed with 26 kills. Karly Stack dished out 54 assists in the matches.

"The girls played great tonight, they played as a team and improved on the aspects that needed work earlier in the day," said head coach Kaki Morehead. "I am very proud of them for working hard against a strong Embry-Riddle Team. We hope that Embry-Riddle's setter is ok."

The Rams and Mountaineers were locked in a tight first set. Early in the set one and the match tied at three, EOU put a 3-0 run together to give them a 6-3 lead. However, the lead did not last long as Mobile answered right back. It looked as if EOU was starting to slowly pull away with set one after a Stefani Sorensen kill gave the Mountaineers a 15-11 lead.

That was not the case as Mobile battled back to tie the set at 22. For the rest of the set neither team had a lead bigger than one point until Casey Loper recorded a kill to give Eastern Oregon a, 28-26, first set win.

Eastern Oregon wasted no time pulling away from Mobile in set two. EOU raced out to a, 12-4, lead after an ace by Bobbi Sumpter. EOU continued to pull away and never let the Rams back into the set. Eastern Oregon took set two, 25-9 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Mobile got its revenge on EOU in the third set. In a back and forth set neither team wanted to take the lead. Eastern Oregon found themselves down, 20-17, but mounted a comeback to tie the set at 22. However, the Mountaineers could not overcome the deficit and fell in set three, 25-23.

The Mountaineers rebounded in set four. With the set tied at two, Eastern Oregon the next six points to take an 8-2 lead. With that lead EOU never looked back and continued to grow its lead. After a kill by Taylor Stewart, EOU found itself up 17-9. Eastern Oregon did not let the Rams back into the game and Stewart recorded the match ending kill. EOU won set four, 25-14 and took the match 3-1 (28-26, 25-9, 23-25, 25-14).

EOU and Embry-Riddle played a tight first set. In the first set the Mountaineers and Eagles had 13 ties and five lead changes and the game was tied at nine. With the set tied, EOU scored the next two points. However, the Mountaineers lead did not last long as the Eagles bounced back and tied the match at 16.

With the match tied at 16, Embry-Riddle scored three straight points to take a three point lead, 19-16. EOU bounced right back scoring the next four points to take a 20-19 lead. The match continued to go back and forth and Embry-Riddle held a 23-22 lead. The Mountaineers staged a comeback and scored the last three points of the set to take set 1, 25-23.

The second set was a set that figured runs from both teams. EOU found themselves down 2-1 and ran off the next three points. Eastern Oregon continued to extend its lead and grew it to 10-5. However, with the 10-5 EOU lead, Embry-Riddle rattled off four straight points to cut the EOU lead to 10-9.

The Eagle continued to score in bunches in the second set as they would go on a 6-2 run that put the Mountaineers down 20-15. EOU looked like they would battle back as they scored the next two points in the set to cut the Eagles lead to 20-18. However, Embry-Riddle scored the last five points of the set to take set two, 25-18, and tie the match at one.

Embry-Riddle continued its set of runs in the third set, as the Eagles raced out to a 5-1 lead. The Eagles continued to play well in the third set and took an 8-3 lead forcing EOU to call a timeout.

EOU started its comeback after the time out. With the score 12-6, Eastern Oregon scored the next four points trimming Embry-Riddles lead to 12-10 and forcing Embry-Riddle to call a timeout. After the timeout EOU continued its hot streak, scoring the next four points to take a 14-12 lead.

The Eagles answered right back tying the game at 14 but EOU answered with five points of its own to take a 19-14 lead. Embry-Riddle would chip away at the Eastern Oregon's lead but did not get closer than three points the rest of the set and EOU took set 3, 25-20, giving EOU a 2-1 match lead.

The fourth set started with runs of three points at a time as Eastern Oregon scored the first three points, followed by Embry-Riddle scoring the next three and EOU scoring the next three to take a 6-3 lead. After an attack error by Loper, EOU scored the next three points to take a 9-4 lead.

EOU did not look back and continued to extend its lead against the Eagles. Eastern Oregon grew its lead to nine points, 19-10, after the Eagles committed a ball handling error. EOU did not let the Eagles back in the game and took set four, 25-15, and the match 3-1.

EOU returns to the court on Friday Sept. 6 when they open up Cascade Collegiate Conference action against College of Idaho at 7 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum. This will be the first home match for the Mountaineers.
