Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's soccer team opened up its season with a, 4-0, victory over Trinity Lutheran in the first game of the Mountie Madness Tournament.
Eastern Oregon looked like as if they would break onto the scoreboard early in the first half.
Jordann Whitehurst had a shot from the top of the box that hit the crossbar and bounced right to a Trinity Lutheran player who cleared the ball out of their end.
That was Eastern Oregon's best chance to score in the first half and the game went scoreless into halftime. EOU outshot Trinity Lutheran 19-4 in the first half.
The Mountaineers offense came to life in the second half.
Mauriana Gonzalez scored the first goal of the season for EOU as she took a pass from
Sydney Nelson and beat Carly Moberg giving Eastern Oregon a 1-0 lead. Gonzalez scored from 25 yards away.
In the 80th minute of the contest,
Haley Hill took a pass from
Tori Fedora and found the wide open net to put the Mountaineers ahead, 2-0. A minute and a half later, Fedora scored her first goal of the season extending EOU's lead to 3-0.
Freshman
Kirsten Watkins added an insurance goal for Eastern Oregon giving a 4-0 lead, which would be the final of the game.
Four different Mountaineers scored goals and
Sydney Nelson dished out two assists, while three other players added an assists of their own.
EOU returns to the pitch on Monday, Sept. 2 when they conclude the Mountie Madness Tournament when they face, the University of Great Falls at 1 p.m.
