Mountaineers Fly By Owls

LA GRANDE, Ore. – For the second straight night Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team defeated a ranked opponent. The Mountaineers were victorious over No. 14 Oregon Tech, 68-50, Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

Brittney Newcomb led the Mountaineers with a game-high 29 points. Kassy Larson followed with 11 points for EOU. Ashleigh Vandenbrink led the Owls with 14 points. The Mountaineers shot 37.5 percent from the field while Eastern Oregon held Oregon Tech to 28 percent shooting for the game.

The Mountaineers and Owls were locked in a tight contest to start the game. With the score tied at 2-2, EOU scored the next five points to build a five point lead, 7-2. However, Oregon Tech continued to battle and trimmed to EOU lead down to one point, 7-6.

Eastern Oregon grew its lead back to five points after five straight points by Brittney Newcomb. The five point lead did not last long as a jumper by McKensey Peters cut the Eastern Oregon lead down to point, 16-15.

The Mountaineers continued to battle and another four straight points by Newcomb grew the EOU lead to six points, 24-18, with 3:41 left in the first half. The Mountaineers continued to add to its lead and after Newcomb's first three pointer of the game, EOU took a nine point lead, 31-22 into halftime.

Eastern Oregon picked up their defense in the second half as they held the Owls without a point for the first four minutes of the half. The Mountaineers continued to extend its lead during this four minute stretch as the lead grew to 18 points, 40-22.

Oregon Tech started to mount a comeback and went on 6-0 run to cut the Mountaineers lead down to 12 points, 42-30, with 14:09 left in the second half. However, the Mountaineers grew its lead back to 18 points, 51-33, after a field goal by Kassy Larson.

The Owls made another run at the Mountaineers as they trimmed the lead back down to 12 points, 55-43, after a three pointer by Carrie Thibault. After, Oregon Tech cut the lead down to 12 points; EOU built its lead back to 20 points after a jumper by Newcomb. Eastern Oregon did not let the Owls come back again and came away with a 68-50 victory.

Eastern Oregon returns to action on January 3rd when they travel to Portland, Ore. when they face Concordia. Oregon Tech returns to action on Jan. 3 when they face Northwest Christian. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
