Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers used a strong first half to defeat Southern Oregon University Raiders on Friday evening at Quinn Coliseum. The Mountaineers shot 67 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 21 point halftime lead.
Brittney Newcomb scored a game high 30 points on 11-of-20 from the floor. For the game the Mountaineers shot 52 percent. Kristen Schoenherr scored 15 points to lead the Raiders.
The Raiders looked to be building an early lead against the Mountaineers as Southern Oregon build an early four point lead, 9-5. However, the Mountaineers battled back and took a three point lead after back to back three pointers by
Brittney Newcomb and
Nicole Redd. With 17 minutes to go in the first half EOU led, 11-9.
Once Eastern Oregon took the lead the Mountaineers continued to add to the lead and after a jumper by Newcomb the Mountaineers saw its lead grew to 13 points. Southern Oregon continued to battle and trimmed the Mountaineers lead down to eight points, 27-19, after a Kristen Schoenherr jumper.
The single digit lead did not last long as EOU grew the lead back to double digits. With 5:19 left before halftime
Payton Parrish hit a three pointer putting the Mountaineers ahead by 18 points, 49-31. EOU continued to grow its lead as EOU stretched the lead to 21 points, 63-42, going into halftime.
The Raiders had no answer for the Mountaineers in the second half of the game as Eastern Oregon held a lead at least 18 points the entire second half.
It looked as if the Raiders would mount a comeback early in the second half as Meister scored two quick jumpers but the Mountaineers offense continued to goal and after a fast break layup by Redd the Mountaineers lead was back up to 23 points.
The Mountaineers hot shooting started to cool off in the second half as Eastern Oregon shot 39 percent in the second half. With the Mountaineers ahead by 24 points, 77-53, the Raiders made a little comeback.
Southern Oregon went on a 6-0 run to cut the EOU lead down to 18 points but that was as close as they got the rest of the way. EOU grew the lead back to 22 less than three minutes later after a
Madeline Laan Jumper.
Eastern Oregon continued to dominate the game and stretch the lead to 26 points, with two and a half minutes to go in the game. This would be the largest lead of the game for the Mountaineers. EOU came away with an 102-78 victory over the Raiders.
Eastern Oregon returns to action tomorrow night when they face Oregon Tech at Quinn Coliseum. Southern Oregon travels to Caldwell, Idaho to face College of Idaho tomorrow. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
