Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 2 Southern Oregon University Raiders cruised by Eastern Oregon University, 83-60, on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum. The Raiders had five players score in double digits in the victory led by Eric Thompson's 16 points.
Southern Oregon, the nation's best team in field goal defense, held the Mountaineers to 36 percent shooting on the evening going 19-53.
The Raiders opened the contest by scoring the first five points of the game and 10 of the first 12 points to take a 10-2 lead four minutes into the game. Eastern Oregon picked up the defense and it looked as if the Mountaineers were going to mount a comeback. EOU trimmed the Raiders lead down to four points, 12-8, after a
Trevor Phillips jumper.
Southern Oregon extended the lead back to ten points, 22-12, after a layup by Tim Weber. The Raiders continued to add to its lead and grew the lead to as many as 13 points, 35-22, in the first half.
The Raiders came out in the second half and continued to add to its lead. After a pair of free throws by Weber, the Raiders led by 15 points, 41-26. Eastern Oregon had no answer as its cold shooting performance continued and Southern Oregon continued to add to its lead, and with 15:38 left in the game Southern Oregon led 45-26.
The Mountaineers had no answer for the Raiders and Southern Oregon the lead to 28 points, 70-42, with 5:55 left in the second half. The Mountaineers looked as if they would cut into the Raiders lead after
Deonta Edwards hit back to back three pointers.
Eastern Oregon cut the lead down to 21 points but that would be as close as they would get for the remainder of the contest. Southern Oregon came away with an 83-60 victory over the Mountaineers.
Southern Oregon returns to action tomorrow, when they travel to Caldwell, Idaho to face College of Idaho. Eastern Oregon returns to the court tomorrow to face the Owls of Oregon Tech. Both games tip at 7:30 p.m.
