Box Score CALDWELL, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team trailed by as many as 17 points against the University of Puget Sound and trimmed the lead down to two points, 75-73, with two minutes to go in the game but could not come all the way back and fell to the Loggers, 82-77.
Brittney Newcomb led the Mountaineers with 26 points.
Madeline Laan followed with 19 points, on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor.
The Loggers started the game by going on a 9-0 run to pull ahead of the Mountaineers. EOU battled back and trimmed the Puget Sound lead down to four points, 12-8 with 13:59 to go in the first half.
Puget Sound continued to extend their lead and grew the lead back to seven points at 20-13. However, Eastern Oregon continued to battle back and after five straight points by
Nicole Redd, EOU found themselves down two points, 20-18.
However, the Loggers scored the next nine points to grow its lead back to nine points, 29-20. EOU continued to battle and trimmed the lead to two points, 32-30, after a
Taylor Riley three pointer. With 30 seconds to go in the first half EOU found themselves down five, 40-35. However a three pointer by Newcomb cut the Loggers lead down to two points, 40-38, going into halftime.
Puget Sound come out on fire to start the second half of the game. The Loggers scored the first 10 points of the half to build a 12 point lead, 50-38. The Mountaineers trimmed the Loggers lead down to nine points, 53-44, but Puget Sound scored the next seven points to extend its lead to 15 points, 61-44.
The Mountaineers trimmed the Loggers lead down to 13 points but Puget Sound continued to extend its lead. With the Mountaineers down 70-54, EOU started to mount a comeback. The Mountaineers trimmed the lead down to 11 points, 70-59, after Eastern Oregon scored five straight points.
After Emily Sheldon hit a three pointer, putting the Loggers on top, 73-59, the Mountaineers went on a 9-0 run to trim Puget Sound's lead down to five points, 73-68. EOU continued to battle and cut the Loggers lead down to two, 75-73, with two minutes left in the contest after a
Nikki Osborne layup.
However, the Loggers extended their lead to five points, 78-73, with 20 seconds left and EOU could not come all the way back and fell to Puget Sound, 82-77.
EOU returns to action on Dec. 6 when they travel to Evergreen State to open conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
