Box Score LA GRANDE, Ore. - Playing in frigid conditions with 30 mile-per-hour winds, Eastern Oregon scored a pair of second half goals to break a scoreless tie, grabbing a 2-0 Cascade Conference women's soccer victory over The College of Idaho.
With the shutout victory of EOU, the Mountaineers have recorded seventh shutout of the season, setting a new program record. The previous high for shutouts in one season was six, which happened back in 2006.
The Mountaineers (9-4-1, 5-4 CCC) struck quickly after the break, as
Tori Fedora played a ball from the end line over the top of the goal mouth, finding the foot of
Erika Whitehurst at the back post, slotting home the game-winner just 35 seconds into the period.
Eastern added to the lead in the 61st minute, as
Mauriana Gonzalez pounced on a failed clearance by the Lady Yotes (3-13, 1-8) at the left corner of the box, making two touches and driving a shot into the right corner of the goal.
Both teams had chances later in the period - Whitehurst missing a sitter in the 80th minute and
Shelby Tucker missing a right-footed try in the waning moments. Jamiece Yizar narrowly missed a right-footed drive to the left post in the 77th minute and teamed with Sarah Hicks in the 85th minute on a 2-on-1 chance that was snuffed by the EOU defense.
The Mountaineers held a convincing 19-8 edge in total shots.
Eastern Oregon advances to the 2013 CCC Women's Soccer Championships presented by U.S. Bank, for the second time in program history. EOU has claimed the No. 5 seed and will travel to Ashland, Ore. to face No. 4 Southern Oregon University on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. PT.
