EOU Falls to College of Idaho, 3-1

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University Volleyball teams 15 match winning streak came to an end Friday night to the hands of College of Idaho. The Mountaineers lost, 3-1 (19-25, 15-25, 25-19, 23-25) to the Yotes.

Casey Loper led the Mountaineers with 14 kills followed by 11 by Taylor Stewart. Jessalyn Smith recorded 39 digs in the match.

EOU (21-3, 11-1 CCC) and College of Idaho were locked in a tight first set as the set was tied at 3-3 after the first six points. EOU looked to be pulling away as they extended its lead to 8-6 after an attack error by Sofia Anxo.

However the Yotes mounted a comeback in the set and tied the match at 11. After tying the match, College of Idaho started to pull away as they scored the next five points to take an, 16-11 lead. The Mountaineers tried to make a comeback but could not and fell in set one, 25-19.

College of Idaho came out swinging in the second set as the Yotes scored seven of the first ten points of the set. The Yotes did not let the Mountaineers get anything started in the set and did not get closer than five points, 10-5 in the set.

The Yotes continued to add to its lead and grew its lead to as many as 11 in the second set before winning set two, 25-15, over the Mountaineers.

Eastern Oregon bounced back in set three. With the set tied at 3-3, EOU scored the next four points to take a 7-3 lead in the set. The Mountaineers did not trail the rest of the set. College of Idaho looked to be making a comeback as they trimmed the Mountaineers lead to one, 14-13, after a Kylee Nawahine kill.

That would be as close as EOU would let the Yotes get in the set. The Mountaineers extended its lead back to four, 22-18, after a Stewart kill. The Mountaineers closed out the set by scoring the last three points of the set on kills by Steward and Casey Loper. EOU took set three, 25-19.

The Mountaineers started off on fire in the fourth set as they scored four of the first six points in the set. However, the Yotes would not go away as they continued to keep the set close. EOU built its lead to three points, 14-11, after two attack errors by Anxo.

With EOU ahead, 14-11, the Yotes scored seven of the next eight points to take an 18-15 lead. EOU found themselves down 23-19, before mounting a comeback to tie the match at 23. However, Eastern Oregon could not come all the way back and dropped the set, 25-23, and match 3-1 to College of Idaho.

Eastern Oregon returns to action next weekend when the Mountaineers host Concordia on Friday Oct. 25. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
