Gonzalez and Nelson lead EOU past Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Mauriana Gonzalez scored two goals and led the Eastern Oregon University to a 4-0 victory over The Evergreen State College Geoducks on Thursday afternoon.

Along with Gonzalez, Sydney Nelson scored one goal recorded two assists in the victory for EOU. This is EOU's sixth shutout of the season, which is tied for the most shutouts in one season.

EOU broke the scoreless tie less than 13 minutes into the game. Sydney Nelson controlled the ball and fired a shot which beat Kaitlin Mackenzie on the right post putting the Mountaineers ahead, 1-0.

Less than 10 minutes later Mauriana Gonzalez scored her first goal of the game. Tori Fedora found Gonzalez on a quick cross and Gonzalez beat Mackenzie giving EOU a 2-0 advantage.

The two goals by Eastern Oregon would be the only goals in the first half and EOU took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Gonzalez scored her second goal of the game. After a free kick, Nelson found Gonzalez, who found the back of the net to extend the lead to 3-0 over Evergreen.

Four minutes later, EOU added its fourth goal of the game. Eastern Oregon had a corner kick that Nelson took and Carolyn Danek headed in the kick by Nelson to give EOU a 4-0 lead. This was Nelson's second assists of the game.

EOU continued to play well on the defensive end of the field as Kailey Moss and Jessica Parker recorded the first combined shutout for EOU.

Eastern Oregon returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they play at Northwest University. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
