KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team bounced back from a pair of losses to grab a four-set win at Oregon Tech Saturday.
The Mountaineers (10-4, 4-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference) knocked off OIT for the seventh straight time. Despite dropping the first set, EOU won the next three sets to take the match.
Casey Loper led the Mountaineer offense with 11 kills, followed by
Taylor Stewart with 10.
Jessica Perron and
Karly Stack combined for 40 assists, with
Kaitlyn Duncan adding 28 digs and
Rebecca Haight 11 to anchor the EOU defense.
The first set featured four lead changes and six ties. The set went back-and-forth before a 12-12 score went to 19-14 in favor of the Owls. Tech had its largest lead of the match in the first set at 21-16, before Eastern went on a 5-0 run to even the score. OIT closed the set on a 4-0 run to win the opening frame, 25-21.
Set 2 was dominated by the Mountaineers. EOU opened the set with a 6-1 advantage and never gave up the lead. Eastern Oregon had its largest lead at 22-10, and won the second frame, 25-14.
Tech held the lead for the majority of the third set, including two four-point leads. The second at 15-11, was only temporary as the Mountaineers evened the set at 15. OIT had its last lead at 21-19, but Eastern closed the frame on a 6-0 run, taking the set 25-21.
Eastern Oregon controlled the fourth set after a back-and-forth start to the frame. The Mountaineers turned an 8-8 score into a 17-9 lead. EOU had its largest lead of the set at the final score of 25-16.
Kara Young earned match-high honors with 12 kills with Aurora Penoyar tallying 11 in the loss for Tech (7-10, 0-5). Marie Baumann recorded a match-high 30 digs with setter Kayleigh Whelchel finishing with a match-high 28 assists.
Tech last defeated EOU on Oct. 18, 2008, in five sets in La Grande. Eastern is 7-5 versus OIT under Kaki Morehead.
